Q: Baba! Su llegada ha sido un gran hito en la historia humana.

A: Millones vendrán a mí, pero pocos me darán su atención. Es una cuestión de oferta y demanda. Dios exige atención, porque cada uno la necesita. La necesidad es superar la mentira y el miedo, que la humanidad ha tejido a su alrededor.

Q: La mente del hombre no acepta que lo genere por sí misma.

R: Tu mente teje nuevas estratagemas para escapar de esta falsedad.  Perpetuamente busca otras formas y otros lugares para satisfacer la necesidad, sino que repite el mismo error, sin darse cuenta de la potencia de la única respuesta a todos sus problemas, sin mente. Cuando la mente no está, Dios es automáticamente.

Q: Sí, Baba. La mente nos acosa con los deseos.

R: Usted lo llama `deseo '. Pero en realidad es algo en lo que la mente se refugia, refugio temporal. Sin embargo, usted debe buscar un refugio que puede restaurar el equilibrio y el equilibrio de la mente. Deja que la parte se funda con el todo, la ola con el mar. Busca el todo, el infinito. Sólo hay un Dios y Él es omnipresente. Búscalo,  desealo es lo único que cuenta, el lo único que funciona.

Q: A pesar de todo los intentos y búsquedas, el contento Baba, es tan difícil de conseguir.

A: La alegría verdadera viene sólo cuando se dan cuenta de la fragilidad de buscar en otro sitio, por lo que no buscan mas, al aceptar que es evidente refulgente y yo. Al ver el estado de todos los hombres en todas las tierras! Cada uno busca a través del estudio y la erudición que está más allá de los sentidos y el intelecto. Entonces, cuando alguien le aconseja que pruebe en otro lugar, acepta y sigue adelante. Sin embargo, lo que buscan esta siempre, a su alrededor, incluso en su propio ser como su esencia misma, no importa donde se encuentren. Siempre buscan la cosa correcta en el lugar equivocado, a través de personas, libros, símbolos, situaciones, caminos. Pero, estoy demasiado cerca que no necesitan un camino. Levanten el velo, y yo estoy ahí. O nieguen que alguna vez hubo un velo, esto es suficiente para que brille.

Q: Cuando la iluminación se consigue, no hay más muerte, ¿verdad?

R: El nacimiento y la muerte existen dentro del reino de los opuestos. No se puede tener una sin la otra. Despues de la muerte, el nacimiento debe seguir. Deja la salud del cuerpo o muerte para mí. No es asunto suyo, ni es su responsabilidad si languidece o perece. Es el barco que os he dado, para ser utilizado con precaución y cuidado para cruzar el océano de la vida. Se trata de un vehículo proporcionado para el viaje por mí. Una vez que te das cuenta de que yo soy tú, la objetivo del vehículo se logra. Sin embargo, usted puede tener que tomar los cuidado del cuerpo durante algún tiempo más, siempre y cuando yo quiera.

Q: La moral limpia la mente, usted ha dicho, Baba.

R: Sí. Ya he dicho, sé bueno, ve el bien, haz el bien. Pero, lo bueno que puede hacer es limitado por la capacidad del vehículo y el medio ambiente que le rodea, física y socialmente. Déjame decirte el mayor bien que puede hacer: Permaneced en lo absoluto y lo eterno. Esto asegurará su emancipación y el bienestar de la sociedad en la que se encuentre.

Q: Parece que es una tarea imposible, Baba, establecerse en el eterno y absoluto.

R: El significado que no se puede " es celebrado 'por la mente. Renuncia a la mente. Por eso yo digo, "Muere mente, y aparece el Diamante, debe ser la piedra preciosa la que anhelemos." La mente es un instrumento muy rebelde. Deteniéndola pronto se cansa. Esa es su naturaleza. Suelta la carga y gana en libertad.

Q: Baba, admiro a las personas santas que han desarrollado virtudes raras y son gigantes morales.

R: Usted no sabe que lo son. La mayoría están afectados por el orgullo de ser tan virtuosos ! Este orgullo les impide verme. Sé humilde, la humildad es la virtud suprema.

Q: ¿ Pase lo que pase, me aferro a ti. Y cuando siento que estoy abandonado, sufro dolor ?.

R: El dolor proviene de la idea errónea de su mente, que yo soy mucho más pequeño que yo, y que yo estoy limitado y localizado. El sufrimiento es sólo otro nombre para el malentendido.

Q: ¿Qué debo hacer para estar libre de dolor?

R: Vaya al centro del ciclón, la varilla en el centro de la muela inferior, en el que no se verán afectados por las presiones, o lo que pasa a su alrededor. Estoy donde la quietud y el silencio son, para ayudarle a establecer en vosotros mismos.

Q: Baba! Your advent has been a great landmark in human history.

A: Millions come to me, but, few give me their attention. It is a matter of demand and supply. God demands attention, for, every one needs Him. The need is to surmount the falsehood and the fear, that mankind has woven around itself.

Q: The mind of man does not accept that it is woven by itself.

A: Your mind weaves further stratagems to escape from this falsehood. It perpetually seeks other forms and other places to assuage the need; it repeats the same error, not realising the potency of the only answer to all its problems, Mindlessness. Where the mind is not, God is automatically.

Q: Yes, Baba. It pesters us with desires.

A: You call it `desire’. But really it is something in which the mind takes refuge, temporary refuge. But, you should seek a refuge that can restore balance and equilibrium to the mind. Let the part merge with the whole, the wave with the sea. Seek the whole, the boundless. There is only one God and He is omnipresent. Seek Him, desire Him, that alone counts; that desire alone works.

Q: Inspite of all attempts and searches, contentment, Baba, is so hard to come by.

A: Real contentment comes only when you are aware of the frailty of seeking anywhere else, for what does not ask for attempts or searches, for what is self evident and self effulgent. See the condition of all men in all lands! Each one seeks in time and space that which is beyond time and space; each one seeks through study and scholarship that which is beyond the senses and the intellect. Then, when some one advises him to try elsewhere, he agrees and moves on. But what they seek is ever, all around them, even in their own being as their very core, no matter where they are. Always, they seek the right thing in the wrong place, through persons, books, symbols, situations, paths. But, I am too near to need a path. Lift the veil, and I am there. Or, deny that there was ever a veil; that is enough for me to shine forth.

Q: When that illumination is attained, there is no more death, is there?

A: Birth and death exist within the realm of opposites. You cannot have one without the other. If there is death, birth must follow. Leave the body’s health or demise to Me. It is not your affair, nor is it your responsibility if it languishes or perishes. It is the boat I have given you, to be used cautiously and carefully for crossing the ocean of objective change. It is a vehicle provided for your journey to me. Once you realise that I am you, the vehicle’s task is done. But, you may have to take care of it for some more time, so long as I wish.

Q: Morality cleanses the mind, you have said, Baba.

A: Yes. I have said, Be good; see good; do good. But, the good you can do is limited by the capacity of the vehicle and the environment which surrounds you, physically and socially. Let me tell you the highest good you can do: Abide in the absolute and the eternal. That will ensure your liberation and the welfare of the society where you are.

Q: It seems to be an impossible task, Baba, to be established in the eternal and absolute.

A: The meaning of what you say is that it cannot be ‘held on’ by the mind. Give up the mind. That is why I say, “Die mind, not Diamond, should be the precious gem you crave for.” The mind is such a wayward instrument. Holding soon tires of holding. That is the nature of holding. Release the hold and you earn release.

Q: Baba, I admire the saintly persons who have developed rare virtues and are moral giants.

A: You do not know that they are. Most are afflicted by pride at their being so virtuous! This pride bars them from me. Be humble; humility is the highest virtue.

Q: Whatever happens, I hold on to you and you must vouchsafe humility to me. When I find I am neglected, I suffer pain.

A: That pain comes from the misconception of your mind, that I am far smaller than I am, and that I am limited and localised. Suffering is only another name for misunderstanding.

Q: What should I do to be free from pain?

A: Go to the centre of the cyclone; the rod in the centre of the bottom millstone, where you will not be affected by pressures, or what goes on around you. I am where stillness and silence are, to help you establish yourselves in yourselves.

¿Alguna vez ha reflexionado sobre esta cuestión muy pertinente?


Una historia que invita a la reflexión.


Hay una historia popular. Bueno, por lo menos, es muy popular para mí y espero que sea popular para el lector también. Una ciudad se inunda y hay agua por todas partes. Un hombre piadoso es atrapado en el techo de un edificio y no tiene adónde ir. Las aguas crecientes poco a poco van rodeando el edificio y no tiene donde ir. Pero él no está preocupado en absoluto. Su fe en Dios es firme y simplemente comienza a rezar. Él dice:
"Dios mío. Toda mi vida te he adorado y tenido fe firme en ti. Por favor, ven en mi ayuda. "Dentro de unos minutos, las aguas habrán subido unos metros más y es sólo cuestión de 15 minutos más antes de que tragara el edificio completo. En ese momento, un barco se acerca y el barquero grita, "¡Señor! Tengo lugar para uno más en mi barco. ¿Te gustaría subir? " "¡No! Sigua y salve a otra persona. Dios me salvará ", es la respuesta. El barco se va. Minutos antes el edificio está completamente sumergido, un helicóptero sobrevuela la casa y con el megáfono, se escucha,"¡Señor! Por favor, espere. Nosotros le rescataremos. " "NO QUIERO TU AYUDA. Dios me salvará. POR FAVOR VÁYANSE ", el hombre grita de nuevo. Cuenta la historia que el hombre se ahoga y muere. Él se encuentra cara a cara con Dios y Dios, y lo acusa de engañarlo y abandonarlo (y por lo tanto se ahogo). Dios sonríe, le da una palmadita en la cabeza y dice: "Pero mi hijo, yo te envié un barco y un helicóptero. Y simplemente optaste por rechazar mi ayuda! "

Rechazo el barco y el helicóptero debido a la expectativa de cómo el Señor vendría a nosotros!


Los acontecimientos en el 22 de febrero 2005.

Con esta historia en mente, vamos a pasar por la situación similar en el que un grupo de nosotros simplemente se negaron a ver lo que Dios estaba haciendo debido a las expectativas que teníamos sobre "cómo" los eventos deberian desarrollarse. Cuando digo "Dios" aquí, me estoy refiriendo a mi Señor, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Swami o como se le llama cariñosamente. 

En el momento en que ocurriera el incidente, la sabiduría de la historia del barco y helicóptero no había amanecido aún en mí. Pero hoy, en retrospectiva, con la sabiduría de esa historia que me guía, podemos entender mejor los acontecimientos de ese día. Y es a la luz de la sabiduría de la historia que les presento el episodio aquí. Era un momento en que todos nosotros, los mayores mayores de postgrado en el albergue de la universidad de Swami, decidimos invitar a Swami para que visitara el albergue. 

Es realmente una maravillosa ocasión cuando Swami visita el albergue. El sabor de esta visita se puede obtener mediante la lectura de los acontecimientos durante una de esas visitas que tuvo lugar hace unos años .

Una visita trae muchas interacciones cercanas con Swami . Swami habla a los chicos y los chicos tienen la oportunidad de expresar sus sentimientos por él a través de charlas, obras de teatro y canciones cortas. Por lo tanto, no es de extrañar que queríamos una repetición de la historia. Pero Swami siempre tiene sus maneras de negarse a hacer una visita a menos que los chicos insistieran lo suficiente. Nos preparamos para tales excusas del Señor, y fuimos al Mandir armados con una tarjeta de invitación grande.

La tarjeta tenía muchas fotos de Swami con los estudiantes durante muchas visitas  anteriores al albergue y la redacción decía, 
"Swami, nuestra casa está vacía sin ti. Por favor bendícenos con su visita amorosa. " 
Fue a las 4:15 pm que Swami salió para su ronda de darshan. Cuando Él se nos acercó, nos levantamos sobre nuestras rodillas con la tarjeta y se la mostramos. Miró la tarjeta y dijo en voz alta, "EMPTY(vacio)". 
" Swami, está vacío porque no está allí. Si usted visita nuestro albergue, dejará de estar vacío. ", le respondí. 
Swami asintió con la cabeza y nos dijo que vayamos a sentarnos en nuestros lugares. 

Y este es el momento para un poco de sabiduría. Pido al lector hacer una pausa y pensar en lo que estábamos buscando y cómo lo estábamos buscando.

1. Lo que estábamos buscando - Queríamos que Swami interactuara con nosotros, nos hablara y nos diera la oportunidad de hablar con él a través de nuestras obras de teatro, discursos y canciones. Eso es lo que queríamos. 
2. ¿Cómo lo buscamos ? - Haciéndole visitar nuestro albergue, así todo lo anterior se podía lograr. ¿Cierto? .

Ahora, volvamos a los acontecimientos de ese día, para darnos cuenta del hecho de que echamos de menos "qué" queremos porque estamos obsesionados con el "cómo" lo queremos! . 

Las alumnas de grado 12, el último año antes de Universidad, había llegado a la mandir con algunas canciones en gratitud, que querían cantar para Swami. Swami les permitió hacerlo, y los siguientes 20 minutos, Swami se sentó delante de las chicas, escuchando las efusiones de su corazón, que se manifestaban en forma de canciones. Después de eso, él se pasó a nuestro lado y nos dijo que cantemos canciones si habíamos preparado algo. Agarrando esta oportunidad con ambas manos, comenzamos a cantar algunas canciones para él. Se sentó disfrutando de nuestras canciones también y todos estábamos tan contentos por esta generosidad inesperada. 

Swami sonrió y sentimos que era 'vulnerable' para concedernos el deseo, y todos a coro y en voz alta, suplicamos: "Swami, por favor venga a la hostal." 
Eso pareció ser una distracción para él. Apartó la vista y estaba a punto de irse. Pero se detuvo, se volvió y preguntó: "¿Tienen algún programa para presentar?" Esta fue una oportunidad de oro para prometerle un programa y ganar un espacio para nosotros mismos. 

Se encontraba en una actitud " de concesión". Nosotros, nos encontramos en un modo de albergue a la visita. Entonces nos acercamos a él con la misma tarjeta y le pedimos que visitara el albergue - Por tercera vez!.  Le dijimos: "Puede haber mucha gente en el albergue pero está vacío sin Swami ".

Estábamos todos arrodillados pidiendo que Swami viniese al albergue - nada más importaba!


Él nos dijo que volvería y nos envió de regreso a nuestro lugar. Nos preguntamos por qué no nos estaba respondiendo en forma positiva. 

Hoy en día, me doy cuenta de que si se ve desde su perspectiva, él también habría estado preguntándose lo mismo. 

Él nos dio la oportunidad de cantar y se detuvo a mitad de camino porque queríamos que las cosas se hagan de la manera que esperábamos. Él nos dio la oportunidad de poner en marcha un programa y lo ignoramos . ¡Él continuo y nos dijo, " Emi Samacharam ", preguntó. Esto se traduce literalmente como - ¿Qué noticias hay? . Esta es la forma en que Swami por lo general comienza las conversaciones. En el pasado, una sola Samacharam Emi ha llevado 35-40 minutos de conversaciones con el Señor. 

Y aquí fue que Swami nos estaba dando la oportunidad de conversar con él. Pero que hicimos? Nosotros gritamos, "¡Swami por favor venga al hostel. Por favor venga a hostal. ". Y la situación se convirtió en incontrolable. Swami llamó al sacerdote y le dijo que realizara el Aarthi . Luego se fue. 

Todos nos quedamos con la sensación de que casi habíamos logrado nuestro objetivo, pero simplemente lo perdimos porque Swami no cooperó plenamente. Estoy seguro de que Swami sintió que Él respondió a nuestras oraciones, pero acababa de decidir no hacerlo, ya que no habíamos cooperado plenamente !


Las lecciones.

¿Cuántas veces en la vida hemos perdido lo "qué" queríamos, porque no vino a nosotros en la forma en que nosotros esperábamos? . 

Dios siempre contesta nuestras oraciones, pero tenemos que estar abiertos en nuestra mente y, sobre todo, en nuestros corazones!. 

Así que estamos perdidos en nuestra idea de cómo nuestras oraciones deben ser respondidas,  echando de menos por lo que realmente estamos orando en sí mismo! .  

Así buscamos la felicidad persiguiendo el dinero, la influencia y el poder. Dios nos sonríe y trata de concedernos la felicidad. Pero simplemente se niegan a cooperar porque para nosotros, la felicidad (el "qué" queremos) tiene que venir a través del dinero, la influencia y el poder (el "cómo" lo queremos). 

Del mismo modo, queremos amor y lo perseguimos a través de amistades y relaciones. Cerramos nuestras mentes y corazones a la Verdad, que todo lo que tenemos que hacer es buscar y el Señor nos lo da de la mejor manera posible. Nos volvemos ciegos a los dones del Señor y la generosidad, porque nuestros ojos están fijos de modo tan estricto sobre "cómo" nosotros queremos que venga a nosotros. 

Vamos a sentarnos y pensar tranquilamente "¿Qué es lo que realmente quiero?" Digo esto, porque tan perdidos estamos en el "cómo" queremos lo que queremos, que muchas veces olvidamos lo que queríamos! 

Swami dice que para Dios es siempre "Sí, Sí, Sí." Él está dispuesto a ayudarnos, pero debemos estar preparados para recibir la ayuda en la forma en que Él la provee. 

En su lugar, nos comportamos igual que los pacientes que van y sugerir los medicamentos que necesitan al médico!. Que el Divino Doctor decida por favor! . 

Así que ahora, vamos a resolver, "Si Swami viniera y me preguntara lo que quiero. Se lo dejamos totalmente a El para que  nos de, de alguna manera, lo que es mejor para nosotros. Y no me dejes ignorar las respuestas, como hizo el hombre en el techo, dando la espalda al barco y al helicóptero o como los estudiantes de la Universidad hicieron al rechazar la gran oportunidad de interactuar con él y poner en marcha un programa . 

No dejes que este preocupado por el "cómo" quiero que mi deseo sea satisfecho, cuando estoy perdiendo la oportunidad de mi objetivo original !"

A thought-provoking story.


There is a popular story. Well, at least, it is a popular one for me and I hope to make it popular to the reader as well. A town gets flooded and there is water everywhere. A pious man is trapped on the roof of a building and has nowhere to go. The rising flood waters are slowly encircling the building and he has nowhere to go. But he is not at all worried. His faith in God is firm and he simply starts praying. He says,
“Dear God. All my life I have worshipped you and have had steady faith in you. Please come to my rescue.”

Within a few minutes, the waters have risen a few more meters and it is only a matter of 15 more minutes before they swallow the building completely. Presently, a boat comes by and the boatman shouts out,
“Sir! I have place for one more on my boat. Would you care to join?”
“No! You carry on and save someone else. God will save me”, is the reply.
The boat goes away.

Minutes before the building is completely submerged, a helicopter comes above and, over the megaphone, a shout is heard,
“Sir! Please hold on. We shall rescue you.”
“I DON’T WANT YOUR HELP. GOD WILL SAVE ME. YOU PLEASE CARRY ON”, the man screams back.

The story goes that the man drowns and dies. He comes face to face with God and accuses God of cheating him and letting him down (and thus drown). God smiles, pats him on his head and says,
“But my child, I sent you a boat and a helicopter. You just chose to refuse my help!”

Missing the boat and the helicopter because of our expectation on how the Lord should come to us!


The happenings on the 22nd February 2005.

With that story in mind, let us go through the a similar situation where a group of us simply refused to see what God was doing because of the expectations we had on ‘how’ the events should unfold. When I say ‘God’ here, I am referring to my Lord, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Babaor Swami as He is lovingly called. At the time when the episode occurred, the wisdom of the boat and helicopter story had not yet dawned on me. But today, in retrospect, with the wisdom of that story guiding me, we can better understand the happenings of that day. And it is in the light of the wisdom from the story that I present that episode here.

It was a time when all of us, the senior post-graduate students in the hostel of Swami’s university, decided to invite Swami to visit the hostel. It is really a wonderful occasion when Swami visits the hostel. A taste of such a visit can be obtained by reading the happenings during one such visit that had taken place a few years ago. A visit brings many close interactions with Swami - Swami speaks to the boys and the boys get a chance to express their feelings for Him through talks, short skits and songs. So, it is no wonder that we wanted such a repeat of history. But Swami always has His ways of refusing to make such a visit unless the boys plead hard enough. We prepared ourselves for such excuses of the Lord, and went to the mandir armed with a large invitation card.

The card had many photos of Swami with the students during many previous hostel visits and the wording was this,
“Swami, our home is empty without you. Please bless it with your loving visit.”

It was at about 4:15pm that Swami came out on His darshan rounds. As He neared us, we got up on our knees with the card and showed it to Him. He looked at the card and said out aloud,
“EMPTY.”
“Swami, it is empty because you are not there. If you visit our hostel, it will cease to be empty. t will become full”, we answered.
Swami nodded and told us to go back and sit in our places.

And this is a time for a piece of wisdom. I request to reader to take a break and think about what we were seeking and how we were seeking it.
1. WHAT we were seeking - We wanted Swami to interact with us, speak to us and give us a chance to speak to Him through our skits, speeches and songs. That is what we wanted.
2. HOW did we seek it - By making Him visit our hostel so that all the above could be achieved. Right?
Now, let us go back to the happenings of that day to realize the fact that we miss ‘what’ we want because we are obsessed with the ‘how’ we want it!

The girl students from 12th grade, the final year before University, had come to the mandir with some gratitude songs that they wanted to sing for Swami. Swami permitted them to do so and the next 20 minutes or so, Swami sat in front of the girls, listening to the outpourings from their hearts which was manifesting in the form of songs. After that, He came over to our side and told us also to sing songs if we had prepared any. Grabbing this opportunity with both hands, we began to sing some songs for Him. He sat enjoying our songs too and we were all so happy at this unexpected bounty.

Swami smiled and sensing this to be ‘vulnerable’ wish-granting moment, we all chorused aloud, “Swami, please come to the hostel.” That seemed to be a turn-off for Him. He looked away and was about to go. But He stopped, turned and asked,
“Do you have any programme to present?”
This was a golden opportunity to promise Him a programme and win a slot for ourselves. He was in a ‘granting mode’. Instead, we were in a hostel-visit-seeking mode. We went up to Him with the same card and asked Him to visit the hostel - for the THIRD time! We told Him,
“There might be many people in the hostel Swami but it is empty till you come.”

We were all bent upon ensuring that Swami comes to the hostel - nothing else mattered!


He told us that He would come and sent us back to our place. We were wondering why He was not answering us in a positive way. Today, I realize that if seen from His perspective, He too would have been wondering the same. He gave us an opportunity to sing and we stopped it midway because we wanted things to be done the way we expected. He gave us a chance to put up a programme and we scuttled it. He was also speaking to us!

He continued, “Emi Samacharam”, He asked.
This literally translates as - What news? This is the way in which Swami usually starts conversations. In the past, a single Emi Samacharam has led to 35-40 minutes conversations with the Lord. And here was Swami giving us that opportunity to converse with Him. But guess what we did?

We shouted out, “Swami please come to hostel. Please come to hostel.”
It became uncontrollable. Swami called the priest and told him to take Aarthi. He then left. All of us were left with the feeling that we almost achieved our objective but just missed it because Swami did not fully cooperate.

I am sure that Swami would have felt that He almost answered our prayers but just missed doing so because we did not fully cooperate!


The Lessons.

How many times in life have we missed ‘what’ we wanted because it did not come to us in the manner in which we expected it to? God always answers our prayers but we have to be open in our minds and, more importantly, in our hearts! So lost are we in our idea of how our prayers should be answered that we miss what is it that we are actually praying for itself!

And thus do we seek happiness by chasing money, influence and power. God smiles at us and tries to grant us happiness. But we just refuse to cooperate because for us, happiness (the ‘what’ we want) has to come through money, influence and power (the ‘how’ we want it). Similarly, we want love and we chase it via friendships and relationships. We close our minds and hearts to the Truth that all we have to do is to seek and the Lord will give it to us in the best manner possible. We become blind to the Lord’s gifts and bounty because our eyes are fixed so narrowly on ‘how’ we want them to come to us.

Let us sit back and think peacefully , 

“What is it that I really want?”
I say this, because so lost are we in ‘how’ we want what we want that we oftentimes forget what we want! Swami says that for God it is always “Yes, Yes, Yes.” He is ready to help us but we should be ready to receive the help in the manner in which He provides. Instead, we behave like patients who go and suggest the medicine they need to the doctor! Let the Divine Doctor decide please!

So now, let us resolve,
“If Swami were to come and ask me what I want, let me only seek what I want. It is left totally to Him to give it to me in a manner that is best for me. And let me not turn a blind eye when He is sending answers like the man on the roof did by turning away the boat and helicopter or like the students of the University did by turning down the great opportunity of interacting with Him and putting up a programme. Let me not be so preoccupied by ‘how’ I want my desire fulfilled that I completely miss out on ‘what’ my desire originally is!”

Y eso refuerza en mí la Verdad que suspirando por el Señor y buscándolo con toda intensidad es una bendición mucho mayor que las "oportunidades" que le otorga. De hecho, cada "oportunidad" otorgada, es encender esa sed irrefrenable por él.

“When one is able to think of God and feel God (pine for and seek God) without actually making efforts, know that he/she is the recipient of God’s Grace.”

Swami never said that the one with whom He speaks the most or the one who has received the maximum number of interviews is the blessed recipient. Nor did He speak of the ‘blessed one’ in terms of how ‘close’ he/she was to Him. He always emphasizes ‘dearness’ to God over ‘nearness’ to God.



An unexplained mystery - 2004.

Now let me come to the special episode of SMSK. SMSK was a silent guy - one year my junior. He used to study well, play well and keep a smiling face always. He was well built but very gentle by nature - truly a gentle giant. The year was 2004. It was a period when Swami (Sathya Sai Baba) was giving us students several chances and opportunities to put up programmes in His divine presence. These programmes were an opportunity no doubt, but the Master used them to teach lessons for life. The focus of this narrative is one particular programme that we planned in which there was the story of King Parikshit.

For those that are not acquainted with King Parikshit’s story, here is a short summary of the story.

Parikshit was the grandson of the mighty Pandavas and he began to rule the kingdom after his grand-uncles gave up everything in the quest of God. One day, when Parikshit had gone hunting, he lost his way. Tired and thirsty, he approached a hermitage where he saw the sage Shamika in meditation. All his pleas for water fell on deaf ears as the sage was lost to this world. In irritation, Parikshit picked up a dead snake nearby, placed it on the sage’s neck and moved on. The sage’s son, Shrungi, was furious when he saw a snake on his father’s neck and uttered a curse,

“He that has done this despicable act shall die of a snake-bite seven days from this day.”
The power of the words of a pure soul are such that they come true. Swami says that one who leads life always immersed in Truth is blessed by Truth in such a manner that all that he/she says will become the Truth!

Parikshit came to know of the curse and spent his last seven days on earth listening to the glories of the Lord. These stories have today come to constitute the eternal Srimad Bhagavatha Purana.

SMSK had to play the role of the thirsty Parikshit who places the snake around the neck of the sage. The part was quite simple - he had to come clenching his neck, cry thirsty, place the snake and move out of the scene. It was a 30-35 seconds piece. But during the practise session in the evening, however hard he tried, he did not look one bit convincing in his acting. The ‘directors’ were slowly getting irritated that he was not able to do even a simple role. Little did they know that The Director had other plans! They tried to teach him, correct him and even play out the role for him to observe and learn. But it was to no avail. After a lot of efforts, SMSK was told to rest for the night and try again the next day.

The next day also happened to be the D-day. And so, the decision was, in case he is not able to do it in the morning, he would be replaced.

A chance to act before Swami is such a blessed opportunity. Greater than the joy of getting one such chance is the sorrow of losing the same after having got it.

Everyone thought that it was this fear of losing a golden opportunity that made SMSK put up a better performance in the morning. When he walked in as the thirsty Parikshit, he at least looked thirsty and his pleas for water were a bit convincing! And so, he retained his 30-seconds role.

The evening came and much to the joy of the students, Swami allowed them to put up the programme. I was watching the programme and then came the skit where SMSK had to do his role. In walked King Parikshit and he really looked thirsty. As he cried out for water, one almost felt like rushing to him with a glass. Everyone in the audience were moved but not the sage. And so, Parikshit put a snake on his neck and moved on. There was no applause or even the semblance of clapping as the programme moved ahead to more serious topics. However, as far as the directors were concerned, SMSK had pulled off a fairly decent job. SMSK was soon forgotten as the other stalwart actors put up a sterling performance. The programme concluded with a rousing applause in the Sai Kulwant hall that had at least 10,000 people seated with Swami.

All the students came together for a group formation when Swami rose from His chair. He called, can you believe it, for SMSK! The gentle giant hurried towards Swami when Swami waved His hand and created an emerald ring. He put it on SMSK’s finger and said in joy, “Ah! Perfect fit!” SMSK got a private photograph of that special moment too.

I was lost in thoughts. SMSK had done well no doubt, but he was not the one who stole the show. Then, how come he was stealing the show now? There were many others who had performed far better than him and they were now standing in a line, watching SMSK get blessed profusely by Swami. I wondered at the rationale of Divine justice that was being meted out here.

It is very obvious now. I was not able to see the big picture! I was like the ignorant geniuses of the 2D world who could not understand theElephant Theory.

Before I get into a digression, let me complete SMSK’s story.

In the night, I met him by the water cooler. I congratulated him and asked what was the secret behind his performance.

“I felt bad that I was not able to do a small role. I wanted to make Swami happy. So, from yesterday evening till today evening, I did not take in a drop of water. I was really thirsty and my pleas on stage were really the cries of my body.”

I was stunned! I was convinced that I had no idea of the big picture. I mentally saluted SMSK as I watched him gulp down mouthfuls of water.

And now, it would be perfectly in place to quote the story of Sri Krishnamurthy, a clerk of the erstwhile state of Mysore in India. This episode has been recorded in the Part 1 of Satyam Shivam Sundaram, the biography of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.



The experience of Krishnamurthy - 1942

Krishnamurthy was a Civil Service clerk at the Mysore Secretariat. Swami was just 17 years old then and His dress was a white half-arm shirt on top and a dhoti cloth around His waist! Krishnamurthy was one of the early devotees of Swami in a setting where not many believed in His divinity. In fact, he used to literally hound Swami telling Him,

"I know you are God; show me Your real Form!"

When all attempts to evade him resulted in failure, Swami gave him a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba which He materialized on the spot, and directed him to meditate on that.
"Be looking at that picture", He told him and left the house to givedarshan to some other devotees at their homes. Swami used to givedarshan at homes then! (What lovely days!)

Swami returned at about 12 in the noon. Even as He crossed the threshold, Krishnamurthy let out a huge cry of joy and fainted in the inner room! He had not even seen Swami.When he came to consciousness, he was shivering, shaking and breathing heavily. And he refused to open his eyes. He kept pursuing Swami from room to room, sniffing Him out (!), asking
"Please! Let me touch Your Feet!"

Those were the days when almost everyone who came to Swami was blessed with several interviews. However, when it came to Krishnamurthy, Swami never granted him his wish. Krishnamurthy too, on his part, was stubborn and refused to open his eyes till he could set them upon Swami's lotus feet. When this continued for days, some other devotees interceded with Swami on Krishnamurthy's behalf. Swami reply was simple and firm,

"If he sees my feet, he will pass away, unable to bear the surge of that experience."

The pining of the river to merge into the sea...

And then, Swami gave him vibhuti and sent him home, still not revealing His feet to him.

Though he was sent back home, Krishnamurthy was simply not able to contain himself. With his eyes still closed, he sniffed his way to the Civil Services bungalow where Swami was staying. He walked all around the compound of the house, knocking and banging on almost every door and window. When Swami did not seem to relent, he even gave up eating and drinking.

Devotees began to get worried and they took Krishnamurthy to the hospital. They felt he needed physical and mental treatment. But now, Swami sent some water for him, partaking which he regained all energy and returned home. He had still not opened his eyes! He asked everyone to sing bhajans. God alone knows what he experienced during the bhajans but after ther, he simply lay down with a smile on his face, never to rise again! He had touched the Feet of the Lord; the river had found the Sea. What a highly evolved soul to deserve that indescribable Bliss!


My Story?

Whenever I read this story, I think of the hundreds of times that I have touched His feet! I seem nowhere close to being the river that has found the sea! And that reinforces in me the Truth that pining for the Lord and seeking Him in all intensity is a blessing far greater than the ‘chances’ that He bestows. In fact, each ‘chance’ bestowed is to kindle that irrepressible thirst for Him.
