ROLE OF VALUES AND ETHICS IN EDUCATION Prof. Vishwanath Pandit_PAPEL DE LOS VALORES Y LA ÉTICA EN LA EDUCACIÓN Prof. Vishwanath Pandit

PAPEL DE LOS VALORES Y LA ÉTICA EN LA EDUCACIÓN
Prof. Vishwanath Pandit
Pandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosaiPandit, radiosai

- Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Nueva York, Vintage Books, 1989
5. Ciencia y espiritualidad

necesidad y no desperdiciar nada.
", Journal of Economic Literature,

ROLE OF VALUES AND ETHICS IN EDUCATION
Prof. Vishwanath Pandit
An eminent economist, Professor Pandit received his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, working with Professor Lawrence Klein, Nobel Laureate in Economics. He also taught at reputed universities in the United States and United Kingdom as a visiting Professor. In 1999 he was appointed by the United Nations, New York as Chairman of the Committee on Policy Modelling for Less Developed Countries. He was elected as President of The Indian Econometric Society for 2001-02. He was also Advisor to the Ministry of Planning, Government of Sri Lanka, during 1989-90.
Recipient of the University Grants Commission Swami Pranavananda Saraswati National Award in 2004, Professor Pandit has served at the Delhi School of Economics for many years in different capacities including Head, Department of Economics, and Director, Centre for Development Economics.
In August 2008 Bhagawan Baba blessed him to serve as the Eighth Vice Chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. Prior to this, since 2001 he had served to set up the Department of Economics in the same university. He was also one of the four teachers felicitated by Bhagawan Baba in June 2006.
Presented below is an edited transcript of the talk delivered by him in the 'Summer Course in Indian Culture and Spirituality' conducted by Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning on June 10-12, 2011.
My loving pranams at the lotus feet of our Beloved Lord, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba with humility. Respected elders, special invitees, distinguished members of the faculty and most dear students – Sairam to you all.
1. INTRODUCTION
This is indeed a great event for the Institute not only because teachers and students of all campuses have got together right at the start of the new academic year; not merely because vital matters regarding education are being discussed for future guidance; but much more because we are able to assure ourselves that the Revered Founder Chancellor of the Institute is here with us and we are determined to rededicate ourselves to His Divine Mission of which education is the corner stone.
Bhagawan has told us on many occasions that His educational institutions have been established to produce role models for tomorrow’s world and for this reason the world would be watching us. To this I would like to add, with conviction, that today He Himself is watching us. Let us be aware of this every moment.
In dealing with the topic assigned to me we first need to understand that education refers to the process designed to bring out the hidden goodness and capability in human beings. Nearly two thousand and more years ago Greek philosophers used the term 'Educare', which has been widely used in recent deliberations. To give it greater depth and indeed a higher meaning it was said that,
pandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosaipandit, radiosai
More commonly, in today’s world education needs to be seen as consisting of three components, namely, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom, sequentially each one leading to the next so that we ultimately end up with wisdom. While knowledge backed by information developed human skills and capabilities to achieve many things in the best way possible, it is wisdom that guided one to decide the priorities. Ultimately, every thing one undertook had to be purposeful not only to oneself but more so to the society one lived in. Enlightened self-interest could be the starting point but one had to rise well above this.
2. THE WRONG TURN
The last few decades have witnessed a phenomenal development in the acquisition of both information as well as knowledge, of incredible dimensions, so to say all across the world. Unfortunately, however this has been accompanied by two other developments. On the one hand, for many reasons which we need not take up now, large chunks of education have become a thriving business and thus been more or less corporatised.
On top of this has been the second development spread over a longer span but reached a critical limit in recent decades. I am talking of the fact that wisdom has ceased to be a serious component of the agenda for education. It is even worse. As someone has said wisdom and virtue have got replaced by folly and vice.
The consequences of these developments are there for all of us to see. Education, particularly that at higher levels has made human beings not only greedy but also self-centred. Swami Ranganathananda, eleventh President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission puts it nicely with his reference to the Ten Commandments of Moses. He says,
Moses gave us Ten Commandments but highly educated persons
today think that there were eleven of these and follow the eleventh
one which says: “Even if you disobey all the Ten Commandments,
make sure that you are not caught by the law.” That is Education today.
- Swami Ranganathananda, Prabudha Bharat, Feb. 2011
gift of god, pandit, radiosaigift of god, pandit, radiosaigift of god, pandit, radiosai
It teaches students the elegant ways in which the prevailing systems can be manipulated to their advantage.
We see the impact of this system of education always, unavoidably from the hour we get up and start the day. The newspaper is full of stories relating to crime at all levels, involving children, women, social groups and communities. Instead of helping others the mind is focused on eliminating all obstacles which appear, rightly or wrongly, between me and my selfish objectives. Corruption has become the order of the day. There is a strong nexus between politics, bureaucracy and the corporate sector, all against the poor citizen and their basic rights and needs. Highly educated men and women with brilliant capabilities are involved in different ways at several levels. Commitment to the eleventh commandment is total.
How and why the world had to suffer the severe global recession in 2008 is the most painful example of this phenomenon. The consequent suffering is still not over. Millions have not yet found employment. Enormous number of good people have lost their lifelong savings for old age. Millions of households again are left with no access to health care and education for children even in countries we consider rich. This is not the occasion to get further into details. I would only like to make one observation.

The benevolent Lord of the universe has endowed humanity with everything it needs: precious natural resources, a head full of intellect able to think and discriminate, and above all, a heart full of compassion. All that needs to be done is to use these gifts of God effectively for ourselves and others.
Turning now to one specific problem to see how policies are designed in the wrong way. As mentioned above most countries including USA and those in Europe are today afflicted with unprecedented rates of unemployment which in turn leads to not only inconsolable inequality in income and wealth, but also several deeper social problems. A somewhat mistaken and indeed oversimplified economic theory is used to promote what is referred to as “CONSUMERISM” as a solution for excessive unemployment. This is not entirely new. One is in fact, reminded of a poem written two centuries back. It runs as follows:
In today’s world, unlike two centuries ago even mindless consumerism does not work. While private vices abound, public benefits are absent. Obviously, new complexities are at work. These have to be understood before solutions can be made effective. True education must help us to deal with massive unemployment and unprecedented inequalities faced all over the world.
What is wrong with the prevailing system of education and why it must be changed has received attention of our best thinkers. We were warned more than fifty years back by no less a person than Bertrand Russel. He said:
“The human race has survived hitherto owing to ignorance
and incompetence. But, given the knowledge and competence
combined with folly, there can be no certainty for survival.
Knowledge is power but it is power for evil just as much
as it is for good. Unless man increases in wisdom as much
as in knowledge, increase in sorrow is certain.”
- Bertrand Russel (1960), Impact of Science on Society.
3. THE WAY OUT
There has to be a way out which must be identified and followed. That is where Divine guidance is needed at the first step. Bhagawan has indeed provided it long back. We have only to understand and follow as He says,
Education means broadening the heart and development of
control over senses. It should make one seek to promote the
good of the world. An education devoid of this is worthless.
- Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Emphasis is on control of senses which in turn requires harnessing the mind. At the practical level, in reply to a question by the enlightened devotee, Dr. Hislop Swami highlights the role of the mind when He says,
The proper method to deal with the mind is to direct its activity
towards good deeds, good thoughts and not allow it to give any
room for harmful thoughts or deeds.
No wonder, He keeps on telling us, “Master the mind” such a way that senses are your servants and not your masters. Scriptures of the Sanathana Dharma have exhorted us millennia back,
The public discourse on topics including education in today’s world which runs in terms of ethics is most welcome, even though it is not as widespread as it should be. The difficulty nevertheless, lies in the fact that ethics is not adequate because of its contextual nature. What was taken to be right yesterday is not accepted so today; and, what is taken to be ethically right at place A is not taken to be so at place B. We need to focus on the spiritual foundations which go beyond time and space. This is dharma or, what may be translated, as best as we can, as Righteousness.
While this is one part of the foundation the second part consists of Sathya or Truth. Once again, the translation is as best as we can think of. At this level one must hasten to underline that there is only one Sathya and that is God. But this brings us face to face with a forceful class of people and their strongly held views which may be taken up briefly as follows.
4. REASON AND RATIONALITY
With respect to human behaviour the discussion usually gets focused on what is referred to as Rationality. At other occasions when philosophical issues are under review, attention hovers around Reason. Scientists typically insist on physical verifiability of the assertions made. References to God and more generally to spirituality typically provokes a strong response from this class of thinkers and one has to be prepared for a well reasoned and meaningful response. Without going into an elaborate discussion I like to make some observations that may be helpful in such situations.
My objective is mainly to highlight the problems with this set of terms and how these are often mistakenly used on most occasions coupled with a narrow view of not only human life but also of the environment within which one lives.
The term rationality is usually used in behavioral sciences like economics, sociology and political science. While it is widely used it is seldom easy to define. In most situations rationality simply boils down to the pursuit of self-interest if not pure selfishness coupled with a consistent process of thinking and decision making.
At the root is a highly restrictive view of not only life but also of the society one lives in. In a rigorous critique of this notion of rationality, the Nobel Laureate, Professor Amartya Sen warns us against becoming Rational Fools.Even those not totally against self-interest have raised serious questions.
Here I must mention another Nobel Laureate, Professor Herbert Simon who talks about Bounded Rationality as being closer to and more meaningful for human behaviour. This qualified notion of rationality takes into account all factors, including moral considerations within which decisions have to be made in every context.
Closely related to rationality is the idea of Reason which must characterize human thought and action. While this need not generally be disputed, the principal under discussion has its limitations which need to be underlined. Referring once again to Herbert Simon, let us note that he says:

The principle of “no conclusion without premises” puts forever
beyond reach normative statements (statements containing an
essential should) whose derivation is independent of inputs that
also contain should’s... Reason is wholly instrumental. It
cannot tell us where to go; at best it can tell us how to get there.
- Herbert A Simon, Reason in Human Affairs,
Stanford University Press, 1983

This is very relevant to what may be deemed to be true education. A leading meta-psychologist of our time, who also happens to be an admirer of Vedanta comments similarly on reason as follows:
Reasons sets the boundaries far too narrowly for us, and would have us
accept only the known and that too with limitations and live in known
framework, just as if we know how far life extends... The more
the critical reason dominates, the more impoverished life becomes…
- Carl Jung, Memories Dreams and Reflections
New York, Vintage Books, 1989
5. SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY
Scientists are typically focused on the manifest creation because of which they get more or less wedded to the principle of physical verifiability for whatever they accept as reality. This induces them to question aspects of spirituality and particularly to faith in God as they consider this to be beyond physical verification and usual intellectual reasoning. There are some basic problems with this view.
First of all, most of us including sophisticated intellectuals do accept many scientific propositions which we never will be able to verify. This is because we trust great scientists who have undertaken the complicated verification and sometimes even their deep intuitions. Can we not apply the same principle to great saints and sages who have had great enlightenment and a deep vision not possible for us, the ordinary mortals?
Second, there is the fundamental question namely, “What is God?” Spirituality gives us remarkable freedom to choose. Scriptures declare, “Thou art That”meaning God. Bhagawan has repeatedly told us “Love is God and God is Love”. How can it be simpler than that?
pandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spiritualitypandit, sathya sai baba, radiosai, science vs spirituality
As mentioned earlier a basic problem lies in the fact that we are totally tied down to the manifest world of body, mind and intellect. We have to go beyond this construct. Delivering the Convocation Address at the SSSIHL in 1985, the eminent physicist, Professor E. C. G. Sudarshan advised that humanity has to balance the manifest world and the unmanifest aspects of life by means of what he called a Binocular Vision. More recently great physicists have come around the view of God and spirituality as Super Consciousness. We need not pursue this any further now but those interested may look for well reasoned view points in Chapter - 6 (The Road from Physics to Metaphysics) of this book:

6. TOWARDS TRUE HAPPINESS
We may not think of it most of the time but subconsciously we are always in search of happiness in all our endeavors. However we have to be clear about two aspects of this phenomenon and true education must take care of these.
On the one hand let us make sure that we are not after temporary pleasures which appear to make us happy for a short while. Unfortunately this does happen quite often. Second and a closely related question is about what we seek happiness from. These are indeed two sides of the same coin and education must take care of both of these.
It is the failure of the existing system of education which has led humanity to many of the problems it is grappling with. In more recent times economic problems are sought to be solved by wrong methods. One of these is what is usually referred to as Consumerism, as mentioned earlier. Many people are squandering money on many things which are becoming scarce for others, typically the poor householders. Bhagawan has warned us about this problem way back in 1976 as He advised us to exercise a Ceiling on Desires when He said:
Today in the world there are several economic problems which are
troubling us. We should also enquire how these problems have arisen,
from the spiritual angle. The available commodities are limited
and our desires are unlimited. To take only the steps which will
increase the economic output is not the correct thing to do. It is
indeed a weak point. The shortest cut is to contain our desiresto
match the available material…. Students should take great care
to see that they do not waste food, they should take only what they
need and not waste anything. Share your excess food with others.
- Summer Roses on the Blue Mountains, 1976, p. 117-119
Twenty five years later we have a renowned economist claiming on the basis of his rigorous empirical research that,
Income growth does not, however, cause well being to rise, either for higher
or lower income persons, because it generates higher aspirations...
Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never able to cover.
- Richard Easterlin, “Income and Happiness”, Economic Journal,
Royal Economic Society, July 2001, Vol.111, 465-484.
The observation is further documented by the following diagram based on hard data from Japan.

PANDIT
- B S Frey and A Stutzer, “What Can Economists Learn From Happiness
Research?”, Journal of Economic Literature
, June 2002, Vol. XL, 402-435
Clearly, durable and true happiness has to be sought from something else; not just from wealth or income. If this is the case why pursue education for money. Thus, let education be for life and not mere living, as Bhagawan has been telling us. That gives us happiness.
7. The Divine Directions
More than a century back the renowned philosopher, John Stuart Mill had clearly diagnosed the basic source of ailment of human society and true education as the cure.
Selfishness is the principal cause which makes life unsatisfactory.
There is no reason why man should be a selfish and egotist
devoid of feeling for others. Education must rectify this.
We are indeed fortunate that the compassionate Lord descended in human form to direct us with true education as the foundation of His divine mission. He has warned us of the six deadly enemies which have to be conquered at the very start of one’s journey towards self-realization. To see God in every being is the ultimate goal but a beginning needs to be made with the feeling of pain when someone is hurt. This has marvelously been put by Bhagawan when He says,
Just as all parts of the body form one organism, similarly, all beings
are like various limbs of God. When there is an injury to the leg it is
the eye that sheds tear. The same type of intimate relationship exists
between God and all the beings.
Elaborating this Bhagawan exhorts that our spiritual endeavor must get reflected in this principle of service to society to which He sometimes referred to as “Love without Duty”. What inculcates that is true education. Quoting Him again we note,
Finally, let us recall Bhagawan’s message for all of us. We have rights which are excessively discussed in today’s world but these must come out of the responsibilities we carry. That the two must go together is ingrained in India’s ancient culture. Let us recall how our beloved Lord puts it as follows.
"Bharat taught that a small section of the society can never command
the inexhaustible resources of the world and for the effective
functioning of the community it is necessary to divide different
tasks to particular groups of people and let each section of the
community contribute its share to the common good.”
- Bhagawan Baba
Thank you and Sai Ram.

The flight of Angels by Shri.R.D. Awle

Sai Ram - The flight of Angels by Shri.R.D. Awle

It was 1996 and in the middle of his Christmas discourse, Baba waved His hand and materialized a small gold-covered bible bringing a gasp of amazement from the crowd of 50,000 including me among them.I was seated very close to Baba and saw it clearly.

That night at around 9 o’clock word came from other devotees that Baba had announced that angels would be flying above the ashram that evening.I looked into the sky, but didn’t see anything unusual, so guessed I’d missed it as i wasnt lucky enough.

However, a couple of nights later, two friends came running up to me on the street and said, “Ram Das, the angels are back! Come on, you’ve got to see them!”

So I followed them up to a rooftop, away from the lights of the ashram, lay down and looked up...

And in the sky above us was one of the most astonishing sights I’ve ever seen:hundreds of thousands of self-luminous beings flying through the air, zipping around at great speed in what seemed to be an ecstatic dance of joy!

They looked a little like shooting stars-yet they were closer to the Earth, and moving not in straight lines (as asteroids, or any similar phenomena would be) but in curves and curlicues.

Considering Baba's earlier announcement, I didn’t see any reason to doubt that these glowing beings were indeed angels. No other phenomena I knew of could explain the sight.

Sometimes two of them would pair up for a while as they zipped about, and they seemed to be pouring forth from some invisible gate above the ashram.

The event had an unquestionably supernatural exuberance about it that left all three of us gasping in amazement. It was probably the most inspiring sight I’ve ever witnessed, ringing out more clearly than a thousand manifested rings the divine identity of Sathya Sai Baba.

And why were so many of these beings congregating in such an extraordinary way?

Simply put ....To have the darshan of God.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you explain the huge amount of cash and jewellery found in Sai Baba's room, which was unearthed after his death, especially as the Sathya Sai Organization does not seem to have a history of soliciting funds?

You know, [devotees], they're trying to hand it over to him personally. But he never
accepts. They want to give something. He rejects it openly, throws it in their face. But these people don't give up. They send them by courier, they post it. And those that were received by mail were [left] lying there. But he had never looked at them. He never used that money. He never touched those packets. There were many cheques for huge amounts that had not been cashed, some dating back to
1993. Had he been money-minded he would have got them cashed. Many [packets] were not even opened. Because he was not at all bothered. All the money and jewels found in his room have nothing to do with him.

Why was all the money not taken away? Why was it left lying in the room?

Because no one had access to his room. No official could go to his room. They had to wait for him downstairs. He came down and talked to them. No one knew what was lying in the room. It was news even to the officials. I, having had proximity to him for four decades, can categorically say that he never talked about money. Money was never a criterion for him for anything. Money was never a consideration for anybody to come close to him. He attached no value to it. If you take my example, I was an ordinary college lecturer, with a hand-to-mouth existence … so how could I be so close to him? I never gave him anything.

Among the jewels found in his room were gems apparently given by a king of Saudi Arabia. Can you throw some light on that?

I've no knowledge of the variety of jewels collected over there or the sources they came from. Was there any meeting with the Saudi king or his representatives? I ask this because Saudi Arabia is a puritanical Islamic state. Here I can say one thing. Sai Baba was very simple and so is his place, Prashanthi Nilayam [in Puttaparthi town, southern India]. It doesn't get any facelift just because VIPs or dignitaries are visiting. Prime ministers, presidents and other VIPs come but there are no special decorations. In all probability, he [the Saudi king] or his representatives must
have come. Baba may not be accepted as an incarnation or as divine by everyone, but his teachings are universal. His educational system is universal. His educational system aims at total personality development, comprehensive growth. It is a value-based education. So, no matter what the religion, everyone can follow it.

A lot has been said and written over the years about the 'miracles' he performed - producing ash and trinkets, gold chains, rings and watches, etc. His devotees loved it, critics hated it, skeptics were unconvinced. Scientists and para-psychologists did studies on them. Some dismissed them as sleight of hand, others were unable to explain them. For someone who saw them at close proximity, how do you look at it?

I'll quote him. He called it his visiting card. Once you give a visiting card to someone you don't have to introduce yourself again. He steps into your life as a visitor sending a visiting card through a miracle in your life. That which you think is impossible is made possible through a miracle and makes you believe in something transcendental, extra-sensual. The miracle is a bait to draw a person closer to God. He gives an example: to make a child go to school, what do you do sometimes? Give a chocolate. But it's the schooling that is important, not the chocolate. Similarly, a miracle happens in your life, so you will turn your mind towards the divine or spiritual life.
But magicians say even they can perform some of these 'miracles' and you don't need any divine powers… Magicians do it as a profession. But in Sai Baba's case, miracles are not performed, they happen. The happening of a miracle is different from doing it. One is spiritual, the other is physical.

Can you expand on that?

A magician can perform under certain conditions. But Sai Baba, anytime, anywhere could materialize something for you. A magician will not be able to do that. He needs special conditions to perform. But Baba, by his will, could make things happen. Sai Baba's miracles have a higher purpose; a magician is only aiming for attraction with commercial value. A leading Indian scientist, S Bhagvantham, who was the vice-chancellor of a university and even the director of India's defense research organization, stayed with him and studied the miracles and became totally convinced that miracles happened in Sai Baba's presence, at his will. One Italian doctor, who attended an international meeting of thoracic surgeons in Puttaparthi, said that though his reputation might be at risk, he would like to state that only Sai Baba could run such a sophisticated super-speciality hospital free of charge.

A BBC documentary on Sai Baba, called "Secret Swami", blighted his reputation with accusations of sexual abuse. If the accusations were false why didn't his organization or he defend himself or take action?

I, personally, would have liked to deal with it differently. But the thing is, Sai Baba never encouraged anybody to counteract [the accusations], especially on his behalf. He said truth is triumphant and spotless. It doesn't need anybody's support.

He went one step further and said to his devotees, "you're happy praising me, they're happy attacking me. I want both to be happy". He narrated a story from the Buddha's life. When the Buddha reached a village, all the youngsters there mocked him and made fun of him for abandoning his wife and child and walking shaven-headed, wearing ochre robes. The Buddha listened patiently and said "Is it over? Are you exhausted? My disciples are on their way. If they hear the things you said, they might beat you up. I don't want violence. So please finish whatever you want to say before they come". That's the compassion of the Lord. Sai Baba told us if you're pained to hear all the criticism, you have legs to walk away. He wanted all of us to develop a state of mind that does not become elated when praised, or depressed when criticized or blamed.

A lot has been said and written about his reported clairvoyance. Apparently in 1998 he told his inner circle that the world was headed for many natural disasters and that the earth's axis might even shift. We now know that during the Japanese earthquake/tsunami the earth's axis did shift. Are you aware of any predictions he made which came true?

He said long ago that Muslim nations will go through turmoil and terrorism. We've seen that in Afghanistan and Iraq; he predicted the unification of Germany, and long, long ago he said the Soviet Union will collapse. Then, he also predicted the decline of the US economy and the dotcom bust.

Talking about clairvoyance, he said more than once that he'd live to 96, but actually passed away at 85. How do you explain that?

Some Hindu scholars believe that, as per the lunar calendar, he did live to 96. According to the lunar calendar, a year has 324 days. Sai Baba never said he'd live to 96 according to the solar calendar.
Two years ago, he pointed to a spot and told me, "This is going to be my Samadhi [resting place]." When I told him "please don't say that", he said "why are you afraid? It's inevitable for anybody. Death is the dress of life".

The British architect Keith Critchlow, who was close to Prince Charles and designed the super-speciality hospital in Puttaparthi, reportedly advised Prince Charles to visit Sai Baba. And Charles was said to be keen to make the trip. There are two versions of this story: one said the British spy agency MI5 dissuaded Charles from visiting Sai Baba because of the sexual abuse allegations; another said they had a quiet meeting. Can you throw some light on that?

It's true that Critchlow wrote to Prince Charles [advising him] to meet Sai Baba. The
authentic version I have heard is that the airport in Puttaparthi is small and was not in a position to accommodate the kind of plane Charles would travel in. Later, I heard that Charles regretted not being able to meet Sai Baba, and sent his respects through an emissary.

Since he encouraged everyone to practice their own religion, what kind of role did he envisage for himself?

He saw himself more as a catalyst; as a unifying factor; he wanted synthesis, not antithesis. He has left an enormous legacy of free schools, educational institutions, free hospitals, social service organizations.

His presence obviously helped raise funds all these years. But now, will these institutions be financially sustainable?

Right now, we're in a state of shock. But he has left us with principles to follow, and
enough money. The interest accrued on the principal amount will be enough for the [Organization’s] maintenance. There will be no shortage of funds.

If you had to sum up his message in a few words, what would it be?

Love all, serve all; the hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray.

Voy a citarlo.

. Me sorprendió y quede devastado.

Volví a mi casa.

My First memorable interaction with Sathya Sai as His student - - By Shri.Aravind

I always felt that when I became a devotee of Sathya Sai, He got me free and quick! Allow me to explain through a little detour. I first saw Swami through photographs when I was just about 7 years old. I used to wonder who this person with curly hair was. My father used to keep photos of Swami at home because he had been to Swami when he was about 12 years old. His experiences are the subject of some other article(s). Anyway, the highlight of his arrival to Swami was his thread ceremony.

The sacred thread ceremony - Upanayanam is important for every Brahmin in India. Swami had performed this ceremony for my father and had whispered the holy Gayathri mantra into his ears. And this was while seating him on His own lap. Since then, my father had a string of experiences that bound him inseparably with Swami.

But strangely, after marriage, he had become very silent about Swami. Though marriage is known the silence men, it did not hold true in that sense for father. My mother, in no way had a role in ‘suppressing’ Swami in any manner. In fact, she was always keen to know about Swami. Today, in retrospect, I feel that it was only His will that my father kept silent about Him after his marriage. That was, till I began to ask him about Swami. I kept pointing to Swami’s picture in our home and asked my father who that person was.

My father had first replied to me that He was the one who had performed his thread ceremony. I thus assumed that Swami was a priest of some sort who initiated people into chants. But then, I got another doubt that I guess irked my father. I asked, “Father, why do you keep the picture only of the priest who performed your thread ceremony? What about the priest who performed your marriage or my naming ceremony for that matter?” Exasperated and desperate, my father told me, “You want to know who He is? He is God. Worship Him and He will take care of you in every way.” At that instant, I believed in Sathya Sai and placed my faith in Him. It was as simple as that.

Now you will understand what I mean by saying that Swami got me free and quick. When I read accounts and narratives of devotees, I came to know of wondrous miracles that brought them to Swami and convinced them of His divinity. I felt that by accepting Him straight, I had missed the opportunity to throw a challenge at Him and get an ‘experience’ for myself! The debate between faith and experience - as to which begets which - is a raging one and I got an answer for that debate much later in my life. Anyway, I was happy because implicit faith has its own advantages.

When I joined the Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School in 1998, my mother told me, “From now on, Swami is your mother, your father, friend and God. Share everything with Him and He will take care.” Armed with that advice, I entered the hostel. When I first arrived to the hostel, my concept was that it would be the perfect Gurukulam. Its not that it isn't, but it did not match exactly my concept of the Gurukulam.

The teachers definitely spoke a lot about Swami and values were valued. I still remember my physics teacher, Sairam sir, asking us in the first class that he took as to what our aims to study in this hallowed place were. The answers that arose that time made me feel as if I was seated in an assembly of sages! One said," I want to serve the society till the last breath." Another said, "Like Vivekananda, I too would like to realize my true self!" It was my turn to answer. The first impression is the best one they say. I wanted to speak something that would make everyone sit up and listen with awe and respect. And so I got up and said,"I want to be with Swami." It did not create the sensation that I had desired as there was nothing brilliant in that answer, but i could think of nothing else! And maybe that is the thing about the Truth. It falls out so easily from the heart and the mouth that it actually requires an effort to lie. And that must be why our ancients always advised us to speak the Truth maybe!

A Gurukulam is special because of the interaction between the Guru and the students. Swami was undoubtedly the Guru here and I longed for interactions with Him. I wondered as to how I would achieve it. It was on a jogging trip to the Hanuman statue on top of the Vidyagiri hill that I discovered the answer. (At least I thought at that time that I did!) As we jogged, my senior from the XII class pointed to a tall and lanky student and said, "You know that Prashant. He is a form boy."

I wondered what that meant and also pondered whether there was anything like "formless" boys... ?

"He is not formless like us," he completed, even as I was thinking about it!

I knew of deformed boys and maybe even reformed ones but these two categories just mentioned were entirely new.

My thoughts must have played clearly on my face for the senior said in a lowered voice,"Swami likes him a lot and speaks to him a lot. He is close to Swami."

It was then that I understood that the term "form" had been borrowed from Cricket! A batsman in form is always admired. And when he performs below par, he is "out of form." So I assumed that "formless" were those who never had made it big anytime!

Now my mind also began to jog with my body and soon was sprinting furiously. Not exactly the person to believe completely in destiny and give up freewill, I thought, "Well. There must be some reason why he is so dear to Swami. I will find out and soon will get into form." I remember sitting at my study desk in the night writing in my diary, "Today I have made a decision. I will become a form boy of Swami."

Every night in the hostel, we were given special sheets of paper on which we could write the name of any form of the Lord we loved. This was part of the Sadhana that students could take part in. While different students wrote either, “Jai Sri Krishna” or “Aum Sri Sai Ram” or any other name as per their choice, I wrote, “I love you Swami.” Every night, I wrote that hundreds of times. We were told that all our “Sadhana sheets” could be submitted and they would be offered to Swami. The sheets would then be used to pack the holy Vibhuti Prasadam. I felt shy of submitting my writings and so, I placed the sheet in my own altar in my cupboard.

Suddenly a thought struck me, “All the sadhana of the other students is being offered to Swami. But my sheet is lying in my cupboard. I should offer it to Swami myself.” My plan was to offer the sheet on which I had professed my love for Him like a letter. Satisfying myself thus, I took the letter one evening for darshan. I felt that if the intensity of my love was true, Swami should accept my ‘letter’ on the same evening.

I was seated in the center of a group of students. I wondered as to how Swami would ever be able to take my letter as I was a minimum of 6 people away from Him from all sides of the group. And sure enough, as I thought, the Darshan session was over and the letter still remained with me. Swami took a group of devotees for interview. About half an hour later, He came out. He came walking till where we were seated and I was just watching curiously.

Then, all of a sudden, Swami told two students to part and make way! Just like the sea giving way to Moses, the students made a path from Swami to wade amidst us! In the new path that was formed, I was in the second line and so would be within Swami’s ‘reach’. Immediately, my ego took over. I felt like some great devotee of the Lord who had pulled the Lord to Himself sheerly through the power of his devotion. My chest puffed up and I awaited Him. As He came near, I extended my ’letter’ and He accepted it! I bent my head down to look at His feet when a sheet of paper fell by my side.

I was surprised to see that it was the letter I had given Him! I quickly picked it and looked upwards to give it back to Him. But, Swami had walked away by then! I was shocked and devastated. My bloated ego fizzled out and I reprimanded myself, “You thought you were a great devotee and see what happened! Remember that it is always God’s grace...” However, tears dropped from my eyes. I was sad.

Swami moved a little ahead and began to wave His palm. He had materialized vibhuti for some fortunate devotee. The practice those days was that when Swami created vibhuti for anyone, any student who had a clean white kerchief could offer the same to Swami to wipe His hands on. Since I had a handkerchief with me, I rushed to Swami. He did not even look at me. Looking at the devotees, He took the kerchief and wiped His right hand. He threw back the kerchief at me. As I held it, He suddenly turned and patted me on my shoulder!

I was taken aback. I looked up at Him and He had a smile on His face. He seemed to be pointing at my pocket and when I saw there, I realized that He wanted my letter! Oh! Was I thrilled. I fished the letter out of my pocket and He accepted it. He placed it safely in His hands and then walked on. I returned to my place. Again, I had tears in my eyes. Only this time, they were tears of joy!

Dios no hace diferencia o causar problemas a nadie.

There is nothing like sorrow to God - Bhagawan

In The Divine's Wonderful Creation, there is nothing like sorrow. Whatever God does is for the welfare of each and everyone . Some people feel depressed and wail as to why God gave them troubles and sorrows. But, sorrows and difficulties are our own making. God does not differentiate or cause trouble to anyone. Sorrows and difficulties are only your feelings. Everything in God’s creation is meant to provide happiness and convenience to the living beings.
