Hoy permítanme narrar una historia real de lo sesgado que nuestro secularismo( ajeno a las prácticas y usos religiosos) es contra los hindúes.
Hace varios años, la Sra. Carmen López Portillo, esposa del presidente de México estaba en una visita oficial a la India.
Ella quería ir a Puttaparthi para ver a Sathya Sai Baba.
El Embajador de México transmitió el deseo de la Primera Dama al Jefe de Protocolo en el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores. Con la debida cortesía, el jefe de protocolo respondió "Sr. Embajador, usted sabe que la India es un país secular, lamento decirle que no podemos incluir una visita a Sathya Sai Baba en el programa oficial".
El Embajador se sorprendió por lo absurdo y no pudo entender lo que tenía que ver con el secularismo, así que persistió. " En lo que a mi información se refiere, en el pasado usted incluyó lugares religiosos para dignatarios extranjeros.
Cuando el Presidente Ne Win de Birmania visitó la India, fue llevado a los lugares sagrados de Gaia y Sarnath. Su gobierno no tuvo objeciones a que el Papa visitara Goa para ver el cuerpo de San Francisco Javier, el Ministro de Exteriores Indonesio Adam Malik fuera llevado a la Dargah en Ajmer, no hubo dudas sobre el secularismo ", el Jefe de Protocolo no tenía autoridad para ceder. El Secretario conjunto dijo al embajador "su excelencia estoy de acuerdo con usted, tenemos una extraña noción de secularismo en la India, por lo que no hay forma de incluir una reunión con Sai Baba en el programa oficial, pero no tiene que preocuparse. Several years ago Mrs.Carmen Lopez portillo, the wife of the President of Mexico was on an official visit to India. She wanted to go to Puttaparthi to see Satya Sai Baba. The Mexican Ambassador conveyed the desire of the First Lady to the Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of External Affairs. With due courtesy the Chief of Protocol replied " Mr.Ambassador, you know India is a secular country , Iam sorry to tell you that we cannot include a visit to Satya Sai Baba in the official programme".

The visibly upset Mexican Ambassador called the joint secretary in charge of Latin America in the MEA. He said "If I can't arrange a meeting of my First Lady with Sai Baba it will be a blot on my career. You have to help me " .
The joint secretary told the Ambassador " His excellency I agree with you, we have a bizarre notion of secularism in India, so there is no way to include a meeting with Sai Baba in the official programme, but you need not worry. I am trying to improvise a solution for you. We are including Bangalore in the programme of your first Lady. Once she reaches Bangalore, let her say that she is indisposed & cancel her visits to Hindustan Aeronautics & Indian Telephone industries, all you have to do is , arrange a car to Puttaparthi & she can have Darshan of Sai Baba" the Ambassador was relieved & elated. He said " I have to admit it was a brilliant idea, you have saved my job & I will be ever grateful to you."
