('Tattva Sameeksha' is a Monday Evening Talk session by eminent speakers to the Ashram residents of Sathya Sai Grama in Muddenahalli)

"If you can keep your mind stable for 21 minutes, you don't have to come back again" .

A very beautiful insight that Swami gave to our students in Rishikesh that I have to share with each one of us.

Swami said,

11 seconds is Concentration
11*11 seconds is Contemplation
11*11*11 seconds is Meditation.

Somebody who can hold his mind for 11*11*11 seconds will cross over to the other side, He revealed. And will never like to return to this side. Because, it's so blissful out there. Then He said, “If you multiply 11*11*11 seconds, it is merely about 21 minutes. So if you can hold your mind in meditation for 21 minutes, lost in ones own self, then you will never come back again. You would have been redeemed, crossed over. There are no more births and deaths for such a person. Because, He is realised already.”

He said, “Look at the misfortune, predicament or the irony of human life. Man has lived hundreds and thousands of years and was not able to spend 21 minutes meditating. And not being able to spend 21 minutes absorbed in ourselves, has caused hundreds of years of hundreds of lives on the earth for all of us.”

It was a new way of thinking, a new way of looking at it. Only if you can put your mind stable for 21 minutes, you don't have to come back again on this earth for another birth and another hundred years and go through the same agony, troubles and sorrows, ups and downs, highs and lows of life. You don't have to experience any of it anymore.

Then He said, “Mind is very fickle. It may stay stable till nineteen minutes fifty ninth second and in the sixtieth second it may just disappear!”

And you would have lost it and would have to start all over again. So it requires tremendous practice to bring back the mind again and again to the state of self absorption. It takes effort. And imagine how difficult it is! Even sages have not been able to reach there. They spend births after births, hundreds of years in Himalayas meditating, cutting off from all the worldly connections and yet they cannot get their mind on to this self for 21 minutes! That is the plight of human mind we all have got.

Then Swami said, “This is a great opportunity. Manushyatvam - you have got the human birth, Mumukshutvam - you also have the desire to redeem yourself. And Mahapurusha Samshrayah -you have also got the company of the noblest of the people. You are in good company, you are in God's company. If it cannot happen now then when can it happen? If it cannot happen this way, then how else can it happen?”

I think we all have to kick ourselves on the back and jump into this abyss. We should push ourselves to do this.

"Lost in the world, found by God”.

We were in America, to be precise in the forest of Red Wood trees which are about 2000 or 3000 years old. That was the area where we were walking and the host who was supposed to guide us back to our place, somehow lost his way and was looking for a sign board but Swami kept on walking. Now, none of us knew which way to go to reach the place from where we started, and here was Swami who kept walking even as I kept following Swami everybody else were kind of lost and were looking for the way. In the confusion of losing our way in the forest, one person commented, “I rather want to be lost in God”. To which Swami replied, “You cannot be lost in God, you can be only found in God.”

The effort is to find something here and not to lose anything. To find that which is the very purpose, the very reason why we are here. The very reason why He chose to cast His compassionate glance on us, to take pity and have mercy on us, not allow us to stray away but instead take us by hand, when we were looking for external sign boards to find our way back home, He Himself is leading us back by walking ahead of us and paving the way for return, the glorious return to our own selves from where we began. The whole effort is to find that, "us", by following Him in this forest of the world, where we lose our way easily.

This is especially important after the Mahasamadhi, because He still had this compassion to find a few of us. He declared in Kodai that He went home to home, street to street, country to country to find us. “If I have to tell you, the effort that I have put to find each one of you, you will not be able to understand it”, is what He said with tears in His eyes. And I felt those emotions of how Swami found each one of us, otherwise, out of 7.2 billion people on earth and lets say a billion people who know Sai Baba, and few millions who worshipped Him as God and their everything, a few hundreds are at His feet. Obviously, the find is by Him, we definitely were lost.

"God is an abyss. If you have the courage, jump!"

Somebody asked St Francis of Assisi, what is the way to God? And He said, there is no way to God. God is an abyss. If you have the courage, jump!

Unfortunately, I did not have the courage to jump but fortunately, God was behind me and He kicked me into the abyss and that's how I fell into it and now I am enjoying it! I quote Ray Bradbury, "Jump, and you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall." Most of the times we are worried, do I have wings or would these wings work at all? If I fall, would I just go and crash on the hard ground? All these fears don't allow us to jump at all. We keep sitting on the periphery waiting for something to happen which never happens.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was also a Master of his kind and I always have a great reverence for him, for his simplicity, wisdom and his experience of the divinity. Once, he was sitting with his disciples with a glass of juice and there were few flies hovering around the glass. He kept watching them and smiling to himself. Everybody saw him smile and obviously they were curious as to what was so funny about a glass of juice and few flies hovering around it. That's a very common sight especially if you go to those parts of India, you have plenty of flies! Then Ramakrishna said, look at the plight of these flies. The fly wants to taste the juice, it wants to enjoy the sweetness of the nectarine juice, but its afraid of falling into it. Therefore, it will never enjoy it. It will hover around the glass and spend all its days in vain.

That's the situation with many seekers of truth. We want the truth for ourselves, but we are too afraid to lose ourselves in finding ourselves. You have to ‘not-be-something’ to ‘be-something’ else. And this process of ‘not-being-something’ is extremely scary, extremely fearsome. Because we kind of know this part of the place. We are familiar with this ground. But we have no idea what lies in the abyss. We have only heard from others, but who knows they might be lying after all!! Should I jump at all? That is the predicament I also faced.

Pregunta: Swami, ¿cómo puedo aprender a abrir mi corazón?

¿A dónde iría?

If you remove the negativity in the mind, what remains inside is only love.

Sairam,

In a satsang held in the divine presence at Suffolk, UK, on 3 April, 2016; a devotee asked how to open the hearth and love everyone.

And here is what Swami said:

Question: Swami, how do I learn to open my heart? How do I learn to become more loving as a person?

Swami: Your nature is love. It would be surprising if one is unable to love, because love is your basic nature. Everything else has piled up on top of the nature to love and that is why you are not able to recognize it. To be able to love, you have to remove all the negativity within you; what remains, finally, is love. What is negative in you? Your own mind is negative.

It judges, it questions, it argues, it doubts, it suspects, it gets into all kinds of negativity. If you remove the mind, what remains inside is only love. There is a tumbler here, with a lid on top of it. If you want to drink the water, you have to remove the lid and then you can drink the water. In the same way, if you remove the mind from yourself, you remove the negativity from yourself, what remains is love, because your nature is love.

Try to see what is good in people, what is nice in people. Ignore what is bad, what is not right; it will help you to love them better. Always remind yourself, ‘I am not perfect, yet God loves me so much. If God also starts judging me for what I am, what would I do? Where would I go? When God has shown me the path by loving me and ignoring my shortcomings, then I, too, should follow the path of God, ignoring the shortcomings of others and trying to see the love and Divinity in them and being able to love.’

Somebody has to start loving; once you start, love will come back to you, as a natural response, from the other person. Therefore, it is important that you practice, to remove all the negativity in the mind, to look at what is Divine in others, what is good in them and love them for that. That is what I do, and that is how I am able to love everyone.

Amor & Paz : Boletín de la Juventud Sai_Número 47 - 03 de diciembre 2017.

Número 47 - 03 de diciembre 2017
Nota inspirada ...

Issue 47 - December 03, 2017
Inspirational Note...
In Malaysia this year, a devotee asked Swami for guidance on youth and elders working together saying that the youth sometimes have great ideas to contribute to the community, but often they do not bring them up because they are afraid of what the elders will say. Swami gave this guidance:

See, elders are saying youth are not getting involved, whist youth are saying elders are not helping! Whatever others may think, you must decide to do what your heart says. If you have faith in the voice of your heart, whether somebody praises you or blames you, supports you or discourages you, do not worry. You must march forward. Above all, for every selfless thought, the biggest strength that you have is that God Himself will look after what is required.

At the same time, when you are working in a group where there are elders, youngsters, and children, it is your duty to inform everyone and seek the blessings and experience of the elders so that they can help you do what you want to do better. They have already walked this path, and they know where the twists are, where the turns are, where the bends are, where the potholes are, and they can guide you so that you do not have to suffer.

You should also encourage younger ones to come along with you. Seva is not to be done in compartments and fragments; everybody should come along. Take the blessings and experience of the elders, and take the help, energy and enthusiasm of the younger ones, and with that you should go ahead. It is not necessary that youth alone should do everything, but youth should lead the way, because they have strong body, sharp intellect and pure heart. They are the best to lead, like an engine pulls a train. Nevertheless, there is a role for elders to guide and encourage them and give them the right advice.

You have to develop such good relations with all your elders. Many youths do not like this path. They do not want any elders to come here, they do not want to be told anything, they just want to do what they want to do. That is when the problem starts. You must all be involved.

Divine Mother and Child Service
Youth have been organising medical camps on the first Saturday of every month to cater to the health needs of children from underprivileged backgrounds. The inaugural camp took place in September 2017 at Chai Chee (Singapore). The second medical camp took place at Marsiling (Singapore), and the most recent medical camp was held at Hougang (Singapore) in November 2017.
For the Marsiling camp, two main events were organised for the children and their families: a medical check-up and a health carnival. The health carnival consisted of educational games to teach children healthcare habits that focused on basic hygiene, exercise, and eye care. A food station was also set up for both the children and their families, so that no one went hungry during the camp. In addition, an arts and crafts station was set up to allow the children to paint, draw, and simply have fun.
Transformation
Selfless Love and Selfless Service
I offer my deepest and most reverential gratitude at the Lotus Feet of my Master for allowing me the opportunity to transform and to share this with all of you.
Selfless Love And Selfless Service
Having been born in to a Sai family, Swami was a personality I was ‘forced’ to worship. However, I really enjoyed Bhajans – singing and playing tabla/dholak. Growing up in Australia, in the western society, worship of a ‘human’ was deemed as absurd. So naturally in my teenage years, I had totally forsaken Swami. I was still going to the centre, singing Bhajans and playing instruments, but not out of love or devotion...
