Narayanan Krishnan era un chef galardonado por Taj Hotels, Bangalore y fue preseleccionada para un trabajo de elite en Suiza.
Tras ser testigo de un incidente penoso en 2002, renunció a su trabajo y comenzó a alimentar a las personas sin hogar y con discapacidad mental en su ciudad natal.
Él dijo: "Yo vi a un hombre muy viejo, literalmente comiendo su propia basura humana, de hambre. Fui al hotel cercano y les pregunte que tenían disponible. Tenían idli, lo compré y le di al anciano. Créanme , nunca había visto a una persona comiendo tan rápido, nunca. Mientras comía la comida, sus ojos se llenaron de lágrimas. Esas eran lágrimas de felicidad.
Krishnan fundó su Akshaya Trust en 2003, para ayudar a alimentar a las personas sin hogar y personas con discapacidad mental en Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Él sirve desayuno, almuerzo y cena a 400 indigentes, y a las personas de edad avanzada en Madurai. El también ofrece cortes de pelo y afeita para dar dignidad extra a aquellos a los que sirve.
Fue seleccionado como uno de los Top 10 en "CNN Heroes 2010" .

Narayanan Krishnan was an award-winning chef with Taj Hotels, Bangalore and was short-listed for an elite job in Switzerland. After witnessing a distressing incident in 2002, he quit his job and began feeding the homeless and mentally-disabled in his hometown. He said, "I saw a very old man, literally eating his own human waste out of hunger. I went to the nearby hotel and asked them what was available. They had idli, which I bought and gave to the old man. Believe me, I had never seen a person eating so fast, ever. As he ate the food, his eyes were filled with tears. Those were the tears of happiness.
Krishnan founded his outfit Akshaya Trust in 2003, which helps to feed the homeless and mentally-disabled in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to 400 indigent and elderly people in Madurai.He also provides haircuts and shaves to give extra dignity to those he serves.
He was selected as one of the Top 10 in "CNN heroes 2010" list.
