El puente está construido sobre el estrecho Pamban Palk, que conecta con Rameswaram en la isla Pamban, India. Este es el primer puente de la India sobre el mar y el segundo puente más largo de la India sobre el mar, construido con una longitud de 2,3 km. 
Es un puente de ferrocarril en voladizo. Cerca de 10 barcos, cargueros, barcos guardacostas, embarcaciones pesqueras y buques petroleros pasan por el puente cada mes.
Es conocido como el puente de Indira Gandhi.

En la entrada del puente se puede ver una imagen de un hombre llorando, abrazando algunas partes de un cuerpo humano de un niño,  cerca de su pecho.

Este puente fue construido durante el dominio británico en la India y se construyó de tal manera que la porción central del puente podría ser levantada con la ayuda de ruedas grandes, de modo que los buques podrian pasar fácilmente por debajo del puente. 
En el puente, hay un camino y vías de ferrocarril para los trenes y otros vehículos que pasaran.

Un hombre de mediana edad fue designado para rodar las ruedas hacia arriba y hacia abajo cuando llega algún barco. 
Una vez vio un tren que se acercaba lentamente, mientras el puente se encontraba retirando y un barco en silencio pasaba por debajo. Él tuvo que retroceder rápidamente o de lo contrario hubiese ocurrido un accidente terrible y miles habrían muerto.

En ese momento su hijo de 9 años de edad, vino con el almuerzo. Cuando vio a su padre luchando con las ruedas, dejo el almuerzo, se puso a ayudarle a rodar las ruedas, para poner el puente en su lugar y permitir el paso del tren . 
De repente, el dedo de su hijo quedó atrapado dentro de la rueda y empezó a gritar. En este momento si el padre trataba de salvar a su hijo, el puente no se hubiese podido poner de nuevo a tiempo. No tenía otra opción que hacer caso omiso al llanto de su hijo. Con todas sus fuerzas, siguió rodando las ruedas del puente. Como las ruedas rodaban, su hijo poco a poco comenzó a ser traccionado por  la gran máquina.

Las lágrimas rodaban por las mejillas de su padre, pero él no hizo caso al llanto de su hijo. 
Si  trataba de salvarlo, el tren seguramente caería en el mar y miles de personas morirían. 


Poco a poco todo el cuerpo del muchacho cayó en la máquina y su padre podía oír los huesos crujir uno por uno, hasta que con un sonido fuerte, se golpeó la cabeza.

El tren con miles de pasajeros rodó lentamente sobre los carriles, sin saber lo que había sucedido allí.

A pesar de que este hombre cumplió con su deber con honestidad, perdió a su único hijo que amaba. 
Con llanto extremo, sacó las partes del cuerpo de su hijo de la máquina y se las acercó a su pecho y lloró amargamente.

El Gobierno británico lo honró en gran medida y en memoria de este incidente se coloco la imagen en la entrada del puente.

The Pamban bridge is built on Palk strait connects Rameswaram on Pamban island to India.It is India's first sea bridge and India's second longest sea bridge constructed at a length of 2.3 km. It has both railway bridge and cantilever railway bridge. About 10 ships, cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month.It is also known as Indira Gandhi bridge.

At the entrance of the bridge you can see a picture of a weeping man holding some human body parts close to his chest.

This bridge was built during the British rule in India and it was constructed in such a way that the center portion of the bridge could be lifted with the help of huge wheels, so that ships could easily pass under the bridge. On the bridge, roads and rail tracks are laid for trains and other vehicles to pass.

A middle aged man was appointed to roll the wheels up and down when ships arrive. Once he saw a train slowly approaching, while he was pulling back the bridge after a ship quietly passed beneath. He had to pull back quickly or else there would be a fatal accident and thousands would have died.

At that time his 9 year old son came with lunch. When he saw his father struggling with the wheels, he kept the lunch box down and started helping him to roll the wheels to put the bridge back. Suddenly his son's finger got caught inside the wheel and he started crying out. At this time if the father tries to save his son, the bridge could not be put back on time. He had no other option but to ignore his son's cry. With all his strength he kept on rolling the wheels to down the bridge. As the wheels rolled on, his son slowly started slipping away into the huge machine.

Tears rolled down his father's cheeks, but he ignored his son's cry. If he tried to save him, the train will surely fall into the sea and thousands of people will die. Slowly the boy's whole body fell into the machine and his father could hear his bones breaking one by one, until with a loud sound, his head cracked.

The train with thousands of passengers slowly rolled on the rails, without knowing what had happened there.

Though this man performed his duty honestly he lost his only loving son. With extreme lamentation, he pulled out his son's body parts from the machine and held it close to his chest and cried bitterly.

British Government honored him greatly and in memory of this incident they placed the picture at the entrance of the bridge.
