Durante uno de sus discursos Divinos, entregado en el Auditorio de la Universidad de Bhagavan, había narrado una preciosa historia de esa transformación, con la participación de Sri Krishna Chaitanya y un ladrón ...
Krishna Chaitanya estaba una vez caminando, bailando y cantando en éxtasis, ajeno a todo, estaba inmerso en la contemplación del Señor. Entró en Navadweep, donde los líderes de la ciudad se unieron a él en su bhajan con igualdad de éxtasis. Un ladrón también se unió a este grupo. Él había sido un ladrón toda su vida y era un mentiroso. Se incorporó a la danza y pensó que ya que había muchos hombres ricos en el grupo, perdidos por completo en su canto y baile, podría fácilmente revisar sus bolsillos. Si bien esta era su intención, lo que ocurrió fue totalmente diferente.
En el momento en que se unió al grupo de devotos, se olvidó y comenzó a cantar y bailar con el mismo fervor que los demás. Después de que los otros se habían ido, él se sentó aparte por un rato, viendo a Chaitanya. Un pequeño grupo de niños estaban escuchando el discurso de Chaitanya. El ladrón corrió hacia Chaitanya y dijo: "¡Swami!... Usted está dando consejos a tantas personas. Por favor, deme algún nombre sagrado para mí ", respondió Caitanya: " Dígame en primer lugar, quién es usted y cuál es su historia de vida. Luego le daré un mensaje. "El hombre confesó" ¡Swami! ...Yo soy un ladrón. He estado llevando la vida de un ladrón y un mentiroso. Mi nombre es Rama. La gente me llama como Rama del ladrón ". Dijo Caitanya:" ¡Qué lástima!... Yo, sin embargo, le daré un mensaje. ¿Qué me darías como Guru Dakshina (ofrenda al maestro). "El ladrón respondió:". Le voy a dar una participación en el botín que obtengo al robar ", dijo Caitanya:" No tengo ninguna necesidad de tal cosa. Dame como tu ofrenda la promesa de que tu no cometerás mas un robo en el futuro. "Él respondió:" ¡Swami! . Estoy dispuesto a ofrecer cualquier cosa, pero no estoy de acuerdo en renunciar a robar . "Caitanya dijo entonces:" Si esto es así, voy a difundir el nombre sagrado para ti, con una condición. Sea cual sea el lugar que pueda elegir para el robo, usted debe recitar el sagrado nombre 108 veces antes de entrar en el lugar. "
Chaitanya señaló al ladrón cerca de él. El corazón del ladrón se había suavizado considerablemente después de escuchar las palabras de Chaitanya. "Sambhashanam Sankatanasanam" ("la conversación con una persona santa elimina la angustia."). El ladrón se deshace del miedo... Se acercó a Chaitanya, "Sparsanam Karma Vimochanam" (El toque de una persona santa libera a uno de los efectos de acciones pasadas). Chaitanya sostuvo la cabeza del ladrón y le susurró al oído tres veces el mantra: ". Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaaya". El mero hecho de ver (darshanam) ha Chaitanya destruyó los pecados cometidos por el ladrón. Sus palabras disiparon las preocupaciones del ladrón. El toque del santo lo liberó de las ataduras de las acciones pasadas.
El ladrón volvió con un corazón purificado. Al salir, vio a un gran número de personas que iban a Chaitanya. Muchas personas ricas se encontraban entre ellos. El ladrón pensó que era una buena oportunidad, para él , de entrar en sus casas. El hombre más rico de la aldea había llevado a su esposa e hijos para cumplir con Caitanya, salía de su casa sin vigilancia. El ladrón irrumpió en la casa y entró en la caja fuerte, en la que todos los objetos de valor se guardaban. Él vio joyas de todo tipo. Él estaba resuelto a no tocar ninguno de los objetos de valor hasta que hubiese terminado la recitación del mantra que le dio Caitanya. Pero, antes de que terminara el japa mantra , el dueño de la casa y otros llegaron allí.
La señora de la casa, que había ido con todas sus joyas, quería volver a colocarlas en la caja fuerte. Ella vio a un extraño en la sala, dedicado a la meditación profunda. Ella pensó que debía ser algún gran sabio que había entrado en la casa en su ausencia, y estaba meditando en Dios. Llamó a su marido. El desconocido siguió inmerso en la meditación. Él no parecía un ladrón. Ellos pensaron que debía ser una persona santa que había honrado a su casa por su visita. Todos ellos comenzaron a ofrecer adoración a él y se postraron ante él. Ellos pensaban que seguidores del santo Chaitanya, otras personas santas, también estaban visitando a su pueblo.
Mientras tanto, cuando termino la recitación del mantra, el ladrón abrió los ojos y se encontró, para su sorpresa, un gran grupo de personas de pie delante de él, reverenciandolo. El dueño de la casa le preguntó: "¡Oh señor! ¿Quién eres tú? ¿De dónde has venido?. Hemos sido santificados por su visita. Por favor, tome una comida en nuestra casa y redima nuestras vidas, háganos este honor ".
Un gran cambio se genero en el ladrón. Y pensó: "Si la mera recitación del nombre del Señor, me puede traer tanto honor y respeto, aunque yo había venido aquí solo para robar, ¿cuántas más cosas puede haber en el almacén de Dios para mí, si realmente recito el nombre del Señor por su propio amor? Que posición alta puedo esperar por la gracia del Señor. ".
En ese mismo momento decidió renunciar a robar. Se postró ante el dueño de la casa y su esposa y le dijo: "Madre, Déjame que te cuente la verdad. Yo soy un ladrón. Déjame ir al bosque. Voy a pasar el resto de mis días contemplando a Dios, y a llevar la vida de un verdadero asceta. "
Escuchando sus palabras verdaderas, los ancianos presentes se sintieron profundamente conmovidos y dispuestos ha llevarlo en un palanquín en procesión alrededor del pueblo y dejarlo en un bosque tan deseado por él.
Más tarde, el hombre fue a Chaitanya y reverentemente le pidió que lo bendiga para que pueda convertirse en un verdadero sabio, digno de respeto de la gente.

Krishna Chaitanya was once moving about, dancing and singing ecstatically, oblivious to everything, being immersed in the contemplation of the Lord. He entered Navadweep, where the leaders of the town joined him in his bhajan with equal ecstasy. A thief also joined this group. He had been a thief all his life and was an arrant liar. He joined in their dance and thought that as there were many rich men in the group, who were wholly lost in their singing and dancing, he could easily pick their pockets. While this was his intention, what happened was entirely different.
The moment he joined the devout group, he forgot himself and began to sing and dance with the same fervour as the others. After the others had left, he sat apart for a while, watching Chaitanya. A small group of children were listening to Chaitanya’s discourse. The thief ran towards Chaitanya and said: “Swami! You are giving advice to so many persons. Please impart some holy name to me.” Chaitanya replied: “Tell me first of all who you are and what your life story is. I shall then give you a message.” The man confessed “Swami! I am a thief. I have been leading the life of a thief and a liar. My name is Rama, People call me as Rama the Thief.” Chaitanya said: “What a pity! I shall, however, give you a message. What will you give me as guru dakshina (offering to the teacher)?” The thief replied: “I shall give you a share in the booty I get from stealing.” Chaitanya said: “I have no need of any such thing. Give me as your offering the promise that you will not commit theft in future.” He replied: “Swami! I am prepared to offer you anything, but I cannot agree to give up stealing.” Chaitanya then said: “If that is so, I shall impart the sacred name to you on one condition. Whichever place you may choose for thieving, you must recite the sacred name 108 times before you break into the place.”
Chaitanya then drew the thief near to him. The thief’s heart had considerably softened after listening to Chaitanya’s words. “Sambhashanam Sankatanasanam” (“conversation with a holy person removes distress.”) The thief was getting rid of fear. He neared Chaitanya, “Sparsanam Karma Vimochanam” (The touch of a holy person frees one from the effects of past deeds.) Chaitanya held the thief’s head and whispered in his ear three times the mantra: “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaaya.” The mere sight (darshanam) of Chaitanya destroyed the sins committed by the thief. His words dispelled the worry felt by the thief. The touch of the saint freed him from the bonds of past deeds.
The thief went back with a purified heart. As he was leaving, he saw large numbers of people going to Chaitanya. Many rich persons were amongst them. The thief thought that this was a good opportunity for him to break into their houses. The richest man in the village had taken his wife and children to meet Chaitanya, leaving his house unguarded. The thief broke into the house and entered the safe room in which all valuables were kept. He saw gems of all kinds. He was resolved not to touch any of the valuables till he had completed recitation of the mantra given to him by Chaitanya. But, before he completed the mantra japa, the master of the house and others arrived there.
The lady of the house, who had gone with all her jewels, wanted to replace them in the safe. She saw a stranger in the room engaged in deep meditation. She thought it must be some great sage who had come into the house in their absence and was meditating on God. She called her husband. The stranger continued to be immersed in meditation. He did not appear like a thief. They thought he must be some saintly person who had honoured their home by his visit. All of them began to offer worship to him and prostrate before him. They thought that in the wake of saint Chaitanya other saintly persons were also visiting their village.
Meanwhile, on the completion of the recitation of the mantra, the thief opened his eyes and found to his astonishment a large group of people standing reverently before him. The master of the house asked him: “Oh sir! Who are you? Where from have you come? We have been sanctified by your visit. Please take your food in our home and redeem our lives by doing us this honour.”
A great change came over the thief. He thought: “If the mere recitation of the Lord’s name can bring me so much honour and respect, although I had come here only to steal, how many greater things may be in store for me if I genuinely recite the Lord’s name for its own sake? I may hope for the highest position by the grace of the Lord. “That very moment he decided to give up stealing. He prostrated before the master of the house and his wife and said: “Mother, Let me tell you the truth. I am a thief. Let me go to a forest. I shall spend the rest of my days contemplating on God and leading the life of a true ascetic.”
Listening to his words of truth, the elders present were deeply moved and they arranged to carry him in a palanquin in procession round the village and to leave him in a forest as desired by him. Later, the man went to Chaitanya and reverently requested him to bless him so that he may become a real sage worthy of respect from the people.
