Una vez, Adi Sankara fue a Benares y oró al Señor Viswanath allí y les pidió que sea excusado específicamente por tres de sus pecados . Los discípulos que siguian a Shankaracharya se sorprendieron y se preguntaban cuales eran esos tres pecados por los que buscaba el perdón .
*Sankaracharya explicó entonces el primer pecado en los siguientes términos. Se dirigió al Señor y le dijo saber muy bien que el Señor es omnipresente y todopoderoso, y que había emprendido un viaje a Benares para tener el Darshan del Señor, como si el Señor estuviese presente sólo en Benares. Esto, según Shankaracharya, fue el primer pecado. La importancia de esto, es que su práctica era contraria a lo que ya sabía.
*Su segundo pecado fue que después de reconocer al Señor como aquel cuya gloria no se puede describir, o como uno cuya infinita naturaleza no puede ser descrito con palabras simples, había intentado describirlo con una serie de palabras y había pasado por alto lo que ya conocía del Señor.
*Su tercer pecado fue que habiendo reconocido que el cuerpo humano es el templo del Señor y habiendo reconocido que el cuerpo está hecho de cinco elementos destructibles, no había puesto en práctica estos conocimientos. Ya que el Jiva que vive en el cuerpo es indestructible y si se estudia con cuidado, llegamos a la conclusión de que aquel que reside en el cuerpo no tiene nacimiento ni muerte, y no tiene apego ni desapego.
Se dio cuenta de que el Todopoderoso reside en él como el Alma y sin embargo, llevó a cabo el largo viaje para obtener el Darsan del Todopoderoso en un lugar externo a su cuerpo.
Este fue su tercer pecado. Sabiendo que el Señor está en él, ha cometido el pecado de emprender el viaje para ver al Señor.

Adi Sankara's Three sins
Once, Adi Sankara went to Benaras and prayed to Lord Viswanath there and asked specifically for three of his sins to be excused. The disciples who followed Sankaracharya were surprised and were wondering what those three sins for which he was seeking pardon were.
Sankaracharya then explained the first sin in the following words. He addressed the Lord and said that knowing fully well that the Lord is omnipresent and all powerful, he had undertaken the journey all the way to Benaras to have the Lord's Darsan as if the Lord was present only in Benaras. This, according to Sankaracharya, was the first sin. The significance of this is that his practice was contrary to what he already knew.
His second sin was that after recognising the Lord as one whose glory cannot be described or as one whose infinite nature cannot be described in mere words, he had attempted to describe him in a string of words and thus had ignored what he had already known about the Lord.
His third sin was that having recognised that the human body is the temple of the Lord and having recognised that the body is made of five destructible elements, he had not put this knowledge into practice. The Jiva that lives in the body is indestructible and if studied carefully, we come to the conclusion that one who resides in the body has no birth and has no death and has neither attachment nor detachment.
He realised that the almighty is residing in him as the Atma and yet he undertook the long journey to get the Darsan of the almighty in a place external to his body. This was his third sin. Knowing that the Lord is in him, he has committed the sin of undertaking the journey to see the Lord.
