Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas:
BHAGAVAN VIVIÓ POR 96 AÑOS
Permitan que les diga desde un comienzo que Bhagavan vivió por 96 años, como lo prometiera. Hay quienes me han estado preguntando : ¿por qué nos dejó diez años antes? ¿No dijo que que estaría aquí en la tierra por 96 años? ¿Qué pasó? Esta es la pregunta que todos se hacen.
Amigos míos, la palabra de Swami nunca será falsa. Cumplirá Su promesa bajo cualquier circunstancia. Mas hemos de entender lo que realmente quiso significar. Simplemente calculen de acuerdo a nuestro calendario lunar regional – el almanaque. De acuerdo al almanaque existen 27 estrellas y, por ende, 27 días por mes y no 30 como por el calendario Gregoriano occidental. Un año consiste de sólo 324 días y no de 365. De modo que Él pasó 30.834 días o sea 96 años con nosotros.
Dijo que viviría por 96 años, mas no indicó de acuerdo a cual calendario o sistema. Los grandes eruditos Védicos de esta región se reunieron y lo debatieron latamente, llegando a esta conclusión y a estas cifras. Esto se ha comunicado por televisión por todos lados. La gente se ha convencido ahora que Él vivió por 96 años, como lo prometiera.
BHAGAVAN HABÍA DECIDIDO YA HACE MUCHO SOBRE
EL LUGAR PARA EL SAMADHI
Aquí está el segundo punto. Hace ya mucho, mientras caminaba por el dais (en la parte central frontal de la veranda), Swami me llamó y dijo, "Aquí estará el Samadhi". Un samadhi o tumba es el lugar en donde se pondría a descansar Su cuerpo, después que Él se retirara de este mundo.
Le dije entonces a Swami, "¿Por qué hablas de este modo? ¡Me asustas cuando dices tales cosas!"
Baba dijo, "¿Por qué? Es una obligación. Habrá de suceder uno o el otro día." De modo que había decidido acerca del lugar para el Samadhi hace ya mucho tiempo.
SWAMI SE RETIRÓ DE SU CUERPO SEGÚN
SU VOLUNTAD
Y no sólo eso, hace un par de años, en Kodaikanal, Swami estaba hablando acerca de Su período de vida de 96 años. Repentínamente dijo, "Si yo quiero, puedo vivir más allá de los 96 años. Si lo decido, me puedo retirar ahora. Puedo abandonar Mi cuerpo e irme."
Le dije, "Swami, todos hemos venido acá para unas vacaciones. Todos los niños están contigo. Esto es el lugar de veraneo, Kodaikanal. ¿Por qué hablas así y nos asustas a todos? Por favor, Swami no hables así."
Swami dijo, "¡No, no, no! Les estoy diciendo que una extensión o una partida están en Mis manos. Yo determino cuando debiera retirarme y por cuanto tiempo debiera continuar."
De modo, mis amigos, tengan la seguridad que Él se ha retirado de Su cuerpo según Él lo
decidiera.
LA UNICA PREOCUPACIÓN DE SWAMI ERAN SUS DEVOTOS
Luego, hay una interrogante que se nos viene a la mente : ¿por qué los 28 días en el hospital? ¿Por qué la diálisis y la ventilación? ¿Por qué el daño hepático? ¿Por qué todo ésto?
Amigos míos, díganme ¿cuántas personas pueden resistir todos estos problemas a la edad de 85 años? Se le sometió a ventilación artificial porque estaban afectados sus pulmones. Se le colocó un marcapasos debido a problemas cardíacos. Los problemas renales llevaron a la diálisis. Se le produjo una ictericia por problemas con el hígado. Casi todos los órganos vitales sufrieron seriamente. ¡Mas continuó en el hospital por 28 días! El sobrevirir a todo esto a los 85 años es en si mismo signo de Su Divinidad.
Es su firme voluntad lo que Le hiciera continuar. Debiéramos entender también que estos problemas no surgieron repentínamente. Algunos médicos sospecharon que debe haber estado sufriendo de ellos desde hacía ya tiempo, mas que descuidaba Su salud; por eso se llegó a esta situación.
Dejemos esto de lado, ya que no soy médico como para hablar en esos términos; mas en cuanto devoto puedo decir esto : Él trabajó hasta el final. Nunca se preocupó por Su cuerpo o Su salud. Su única preocupación y atención se centraba en el bienestar de Sus devotos. En el proceso, enfermó, mas descuidó Su salud. Tal vez quería retirarse. Probablemente pensó que Su Divina agenda había llegado a su fin, que era tiempo de partir. Fue Él quien decidió cuando venir y Él decidió cuando partir. De modo que tengan la certeza que tanto Su advenimiento como Su eclipse fueros decididos por Él.
SATHYA SAI BABA – EL ÚNICO MAESTRO ESPIRITUAL
QUE RECIBIERA HONORES DE ESTADO
¡Resulta maravilloso e increíble que ese día, el 27 de abril, fuera motivo de celebración! Manmohan Singh, Primer Ministro de la India y el más alto líder del Partido del Congreso, Señora Sonia Gandhi, Ministros del Gabinete como la Sra. Ambika Sony, Gobernadores como Shivaraj Patel y Narasimhan, Primeros Ministros como el Sr. Kumar Reddy de Andhra Pradesh, Yeddyurappa de Karnataka, estuvieran todos presentes para el día del Samadhi, cuando se llevó el cuerpo a su lugar de descanso.
Se trajo una banda militar especial desde Mysore. Rindieron honores y marcharon para ir a colocar la bandera tricolor sobre el cuerpo. El cuerpo fue llevado al dais envuelto en la bandera y luego colocado en el lugar del Samadhi que Swami había decidido hace tiempo.
Hasta donde llega mi conocimiento, honores como esto no se le rinden sino al más espiritual guru y no existe otro gobierno que llegue a mostrar un tal respeto y reverencia a un guru espiritual. Sathya Sai Baba ha sido el único Maestro espiritual en recibir honores de estado.
Esto me hace recordar el fallecimiento de personas del más alto rango en este país. Sé de los honores de estado que se le rindieran a Indira Gandhi y a Rajiv Gandhi, ex Primeros Ministros de la India, en el día en que murieran. Honores similares fueron los otorgados a Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
UN MILLÓN DE PERSONAS TUVO EL ÚLTIMO DARSHAN DE SWAMI
El dais estaba bellamente decorado y habían llegado representantes de distintas religiones en vuelos desde todas partes. Asistieron, el Imam de Delhi – el sumo sacerdote de la fe Islámica – el más alto dignatario de la religión Sikh, sacerdores cristianos y budistas como enviados especiales, y todos ellos ofrecieron sus plegarias, leyendo pasajes de sus respectivas Escrituras Sagradas en honor y adoración de Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Durante dos días se Le mantuvo de cuerpo presente para que todos pudieran tener Su último darshan. Swami abandonó Su cuerpo el 24 de abril a las 07:40 hrs. Su cuerpo fue traído al Mandir cerca de mediodía y se colocó en el Sai Kulwant Hall para el darshan público hasta las 20:00 hrs. Luego se Le colocó en el ataúd y se dejó por dos días, el 25 y 26 de abril, para que todos los devotos tuvieran la oportunidad de un último darshan.
Créanme, mis amigos, cientos de miles de personas se alinearon en largas filas y fueron marchando hacia el ataúd con perfecta disciplina para presentar sus respetos. Se ha estimado que por lo menos cerca de 10 lakh (o sea un millón) de gentes deben haber tenido Su último darshan.
¡Cómo había llegado a hacerse querer por toda esta gente – aldeanos, granjeros, trabajadores temporeros, analfabetos, gentes pobrísimas, gentes de clase media y gentes pudientes! ¡Como pudo
atraer transversalmente a gentes de todos los sectores, de todas las posiciones! ¡Llegaron como un tsunami! ¡Puttaparthi fue inundado por un mar de gentes!
FUE UN DERRAME DE AMOR Y DEVOCIÓN
¿Y qué pasó con los 'medios informativos' ? Miembros de los media regionales, estatales, nacionales e internacionales, tanto de la prensa como de la televisión, acamparon aquí en Prasanthi por 20 días. Todos los canales esperaban los boletines médicos sobre Bhagavan. La administración tanto estatal como distrital mostró su interés por emitir regularmente boletines informativos, puesto que el público se mostraba ansioso por saber.
Esos días fueron muy duros, aunque era una realidad. Durante los 28 días en que Bhagavan estuvo hospitalizado, no se pensaba en otra cosa como no fuera Su salud. En otras palabras, nuestros niveles espirituales se elevaron. En el área local, todas las tiendas y hoteles se cerraron. Toda la gente local, desde el nivel de los guardias hasta los más adinerados, cocinaba y distribuía gratuitamente alimentos a loslakh de devotos que venían a presentar su último homenaje a Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. En algunos lugares, incluso se servían cosas caras como pulav, biriyani, frutas y helados. Nadie les había dado instrucciones para hacerlo. Esto no tenía precedentes. Era un verdadero derrame de amor y de devoción. ¡Asombroso!
Debiera mencionar también que desde el mismo 24 de abril en la tarde, a las 18:00 hrs., hasta que Su cuerpo fuera llevado a descansar, el 27 a las 09:00 Hrs, tuvimos Akhanda Bhajans. Hubo hombres y mujeres, niños y niñas, cantando bhajans durante todo este período y la atmósfera estaba llena de devoción, tributos florales y decoraciones. Es muy apropiado puesto que el advenimiento de un Avatar constituye una celebración y también lo es el que se retire de Su cuerpo.
Toda la humanidad le expresó su gratitud al Avatar. Fue un saludo en oración a nuestro Señor, una expresión de respeto, una demostración de amor. El Fideicomiso mantuvo varias reuniones para tomar ciertas decisiones y ofreció también algunas conferencias de prensa para responder a las interrogantes que se le presentaban.
EL DUDAR DE LOS FIDEICOMISARIOS EQUIVALE A DUDAR
DE LA SABIDURÍA DE BABA
Me gustaría resumir lo que sé acerca del Fideocomiso. Se han manifestado muchas aprensiones y mucho vano cotilleo. Algunos periódicos publicaron falsas declaraciones, atribuyéndole oscuros motivos a los Fideicomisarios. No obstante, como alguien que ha estado asociado al movimiento de Sathya Sai por 40 años y que ha vivido muy próximo a Swami y a los Fideocomisarios por los últimos 22 años, estoy cierto que puedo entregarles alguna información objetiva sobre el Fideicomiso.
Los hechos : el Fideicomiso Central Sri Sathya Sai fue fundado por Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba mismo y por nadie más. Bhagavan es el fundador y el Presidente del Fideicomiso Central. Los miembros fueron nombrados por Él. No fueron elegidos. No fueron elegidos por el público. Fueron seleccionados especialmente por Bhagavan en base a su prestigio, el espiritu de dedicación a Su misión y movimiento, y, sobre todo, por su confianza y devoción. Basado en estos criterios, Swami Mismo eligió a los miembros del Fideocomiso Central Sri Sathya Sai. El cuestionar esto o el dudar de ellos es poner en duda la sabiduría de Baba, lo cual es un sacrilegio.
LOS MIEMBROS DEL FIDEOCOMISO SON PERSONAS REPUTADAS
Y FERVIENTES DEVOTOS
Voy a mencionar a un par de personas, no a todas. La primera y más importante es el Secretario del Fideicomiso Central Sri Sathya Sai, el Sr. N.C. Chakravarthi. El Sr. Chakravarthi es oriundo del Estado de Tamil Nadu y es un funcionario público. Llegó a un alto rango como funcionario del Servicio Administrativo Indio, desempeñándose como Recaudador Distrital en Anantapur. Le quedaban aún 20 años de servicio cuando Swami le pidió que renunciara y se viniera a Prasanthi Nilayam.
¿Podría igualarle alguien en su devoción y sacrificio? ¡Nadie! Créanme o no, él no ha salido del recinto de Prasanthi Nilayam por 30 años. Está alli como un perro guardián. Actuó como Archivista en la Universidad Sri Sathya Sai por largos 13 años. Más adelante y hasta ahora, ha servido como Sectetario del Fidecomiso Central. Tiene alrededor de 75 años creo, y sus dos hijos se han establecido en el exterior. No tiene nada que ganar, ni necesidad de procurarse un sustento. Nada
necesita. No vino en busca de poder, ya que tenía un alto puesto. Vino acá llevado por su devoción y su dedicación únicamente. ¿Podríamos dudar de él?
El segundo hombre es el Presidente de la Corte Suprema de la India, el Juez P.N. Bhagwati, internacionalmente conocido. Fue Presidente de la Comisión para los Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas. Ha viajado por todo el mundo, es un gran escritor y es conocido por sus excepcionales juicios. Un hombre muy popular en círculos judiciales, está bordeando los 90 años, y fue elegido por Baba como miembro del Fideicomiso. ¿Dudaríamos de él ahora? ¿Qué sería lo que necesite? Anhelaba una oportunidad para servirle a Él, y por ello aceptó la invitación de Baba para unirse al Fideicomiso.
Luego tenemos a Sri Indulal Shah de Mumbai, quien superó los 90 años. Es una figura muy popular, un hombre disciplinado. Con más de cinco décadas de incansable servicio y dedicación y un muy alto nivel de devoción, fue quien ha desarrollado a la Organización Sri Sathya Sai a su presente nivel. Todo el mundo le respeta por su disciplina y su visión. ¿Qué es lo que recibe por esta membrecía? Vino acá para servir a Swami, en respuesta a Su invitación de convertirse en miembro del Fideocomiso Central.
Por lo tanto, amigos míos, no se dejen arrastrar por nada de lo que se diga en contra de ninguno de los Fideicomisarios. Son figuras populares, genuinas, muy respetadas y reputadas. Son fervientes devotos y por ende Swami les seleccionó como miembros del Fideicomiso Central Sri Sathya Sai.
Para información de ustedes, nadie recibe dinero directamente. En la Organizacion Sai, nadie está autorizado para recolectar fondos. Deben enviarlos al banco, pedir un recibo y todo queda debidamente registrado. Todas las cuentas se someten anualmente a una auditoría y los informes se envían al gobierno central. Todos son personas responsables.
Por ello, no se dejen impresionar por lo que sea que se diga acerca de los miembros del Fideicomiso Central. No duden de ellos puesto que éste se constituyó según Su Voluntad y ha estado funcionando con éxito, con todas sus auditorías y credibilidad durante todos estos años.
LA VERDAD NADA TEME
Hay varios canales que cubren las noticias diarias. Pensé que era ya tiempo para que yo saliera y les hablara abiertamente. Les hablá a casi todas las organizaciones de los medios noticiosos, explicando la posición exacta y disipando sus dudas. Les animé para que plantearan tantas preguntas como quisieran, puesto que la verdad no siente temor. La verdad no guarda dudas; exige franqueza, temeridad y apertura.
Sin que se me lo solicitara, lo hice como acto de servicio, como una muestra de amor por Bhagavan. Lo hice, porque sentí un llamado interno : "¡Vamos, sale! ¡Háblale a todos! ¡Declara lo que sabes! No permitas que siga adelante esta aniquilación de caracteres. Dile la verdad al mundo, aunque te parezca poco lo que sepas."
De modo que, como respuesta a mi conciencia, salí y hablé con todos. Siento hoy la gran satisfacción de haber prestado este pequeño servicio, una obligación para con la organización y para Swami.
CELEBRACIONES EN PRASANTHI NILAYAM
DEL 4 AL 6 DE MAYO
Entonces, los administradores planificaron reuniones para los días 4, 5 y 6 de mayo. Sucede que el cuatro de mayo es el 11º día del Samadhi y el 6, el 13º día. El 6 de mayo coincide también con ser el Día de Easwaramma. De modo que teníamos programas del 4 al 6 de mayo en el Sai Kulwant Hall.
El día 4, tuvimos una reunión en el Sai Kulwant Hall, durante la cual unos pocos de los 'decanos' compartieron sus experiencias con los devotos. Yo fui uno de ellos. Junto a mí, tuvimos al Dr. Narendra Reddy, Vicepresidente de la Organización Internacional Sathya Sai de Los Angeles, Calif.
USA. También tuvimos a otro orador, Sri Srinivasan, Presidente Panindio de la Organización Sri Sathya Sai, y, finalmente, al Sr. Sanjay Sahani, Director del Instituto de Estudios Superiores Sri Sathya Sai, del Campus de Brindavan, Bangalore.
El día 5, los miembros del Fideicomiso les hablaron a los directores de las diferentes secciones que trabajan en Prasanthi Nilayam. Hablaron con los estudiantes, consolándoles y asegurándoles su continuado apoyo. El 6, día de Easwaramma, se alimentó a cerca de 20.000 pobres en el Hill View Stadium. Entiendo que se atendió a 12.000 mujeres y a 8.000 hombres ese día. Cada uno recibió
alimento y vestimenta. La policía ayudó a mantener el orden. En la distribución participaron el Sevadal y estudiantes de la universidad.
También el 6, se le sirvió a las 10:30 Hrs, un almuerzo a todos los devotos, visitantes y residentes en Prasanthi Nilayam, en la Cantina de la India del Sur. De modo que esa mañana fue grande la celebración. A las 17:00 hrs, tuvimos una reunión, durante la cual nos habló el Dr. Venkataraman, el ex Vicecanciller de la Universidad Sri Sathya Sai. También habló, en telugu, el Sr. V.S.R. Murthy de Hyderabad.
Y, finalmente, tuvimos un festival musical. Los vocalistas Malladi Brothers cantaron alabanzas a Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Con esto concluyeron las celebraciones.
TODAS LAS ACTIVIDADES EN PRASANTHI NILAYAM
SIGUEN IGUAL QUE ANTES
Agregaré otro punto : Hoy en día Prasanthi Nilayam se ha reconciliado lentamente y se ha ajustado a la nueva situación. Las gentes asisten a bhajans de manera habitual, el trabajo sigue de manera habitual y al final de los bhajans, la gente se alinea. Después del arathi le presentan sus respetos al Samadhi y luego se retiran el silencio. Un Divino sillón se mantiene junto al Samadhi para que la gente tanga darshan. El programa espiritual, Nagasankirtanam, recitado de los Vedas y los bhajans, todo sigue tal como estaba agendado.
El Presidente Panindio Srinivasan y miembro del Fideicomiso Central dejó categóricamente en claro que todas las actividades seguirán de manera habitual. Las visitas de los Estados continuarán como antes. Los devotos de diferentes naciones continuarán visitando Prasanthi Nilayam como antes. Las conferencias, talleres -- provinciales, nacionales e internacionales – se llevarán a cabo como antes.
Pensamos también en organizar una Conferencia Ortopédica Internacional y un Taller Internacional para Adultos Jóvenes. Los 17 y 8 de mayo celebraremos Buda Purnima en honor al Señor Buda. Vendrán alrededor de 800 asistentes de Malasia, Indonesia, Japón, China y Hong Kong.
LAS DIVINAS VIBRACIONES DE BABA ESTÁN POR DOQUIER
Están presentes las Divinas vibraciones y la subyacente corriente de la Divinidad. Todo el que se acerca al Samadhi, experimenta la sonrisa de Baba; siente la presencia física de Baba. Puede que no esté frente a nosotros en Su cuerpo y forma, mas Le vemos allí. Le encontramos respondiendo a nuestras plegarias. La gente está recibiendo mensajes desde el Samadhi. Algunos Le ven sentado en el Divino sillón, aunque Él no está ya físicamente presente.
Mis amigos, estoy más que seguro que este lugar habrá de convertirse en una Meca, un Vaticano, una Jerusalén, Belén, Badari, Kashi, Tirupathi, Mathura, Shirdi, Gurudwara, una sinagoga, una mezquita, una iglesia. Este lugar siempre va a atraer gente, porque ha sido desarrollado por el Avatar Mismo durante Su vida.
Sabemos de lugares que se han desarrollado siguiendo al retiro del Avatar, mas este lugar ha sido desarrollado palmo a palmo por Sri Sathya Sai Baba Mismo. ¡Cada granito de esto es Suyo! La universidad, los institutos, las escuelas y los hospitales se han establecido – ¡el único centro de apoyo para los pobres y necesitados, para la educación y la atención de la salud!
PRASHANTI NILAYAM ES UN GENERADOR ESPIRITUAL
Por todo ello, no cabe duda alguna que este Prasanthi Nilayam – un centro de peregrinación, un centro de servicio y de sadhana, un centro de confraternidad entre los credos, un centro que orienta a cada buscador espiritual individualmente – continuará con su gloria, su esplendor, su grandeza y su ritmo en los años venideros, porque aquí están por todos lados las Divinas vibraciones de Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Él estará observando. Del mismo modo en que un generador es una fuente de poder, Prasanthi Nilayam es un generador espiritual. Fuera de este lugar, la energía espiritual es arrastrada hacia diferentes canales por diferentes personas, quienesquiera que sean, sea cual fuere la región o pais al que pertenezcan. Por eso, Prasanthi Nilayam continuará otorgando bienaventuranza y paz a todos los devotos por siempre jamás.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
BHAGAVAN LIVED FOR 96 YEARS
Let me tell you at the outset that Bhagavan lived for 96 years, as He promised. People have been asking me: why He left us ten years earlier? Did He not say that He would be here on this earth for 96 years? What happened? This is the question everyone has.
My friends, Swami’s word will never be untrue. He will live up to His promise under all circumstances. But we must understand what He really meant. Just calculate as per the regional lunar calendar—the almanac. According to the almanac, there are 27 stars, and hence 27 days per month, not 30 as per the English calendar. A year consists of only 324 days, not 365. Thus He spent 30,834 days or 96 years with us.
He said that He would live for 96 years, but He did not say according to what calendar or what system. The great Vedic scholars of this region assembled and discussed at length, and arrived at these figures. This has been telecast all over. People are now convinced that He lived for 96 years as He promised.
BHAGAVAN HAD DECIDED THE SPOT FOR THE SAMADHI LONG AGO
Here is the second point. Long back, while moving on the dais (in the front centre part of the veranda), Swami called me and said, “There will be the Samadhihere.” A samadhi or tomb is the place where His body would be laid to rest, after He withdraws from this world.
Then I said to Swami, “Why do You speak that way? I am frightened when You say such things!”
Baba said, “Why? It’s a must. One day or another, it has to happen.” So He decided the spot for the Samadhi long ago.
SWAMI HAS WITHDRAWN FROM HIS BODY AS HE WILLED
Not only that, a few years ago in Kodaikanal, Swami was speaking about His lifespan of 96 years. Suddenly He said, “If I want, I can live even beyond 96. If I decide, I can withdraw now. I can leave My body and go.”
I said, “Swami, we have all come here for a vacation. All children are with you. This is summer camp, Kodaikanal. Why do you speak like that and frighten everyone? Please Swami, don’t speak like that.”
Swami said, “No, no, no! I am telling you that extension and withdrawal are in My hands. I determine when I should withdraw and how long I should continue.”
Therefore my friends, be sure that He has withdrawn from His body as He willed.
SWAMI’S ONLY CONCERN WAS HIS DEVOTEES
Then a question comes to mind: why 28 days in the hospital? Why dialysis and ventilator? Why the liver damage? Why all this?
My friends, tell me how many people can withstand all these problems at the age of 85? He was kept on ventilator as his lungs were affected. A pacemaker was fixed due to heart problems. Kidney problem led to dialysis. He suffered from jaundice due to liver problems. Almost all vital organs suffered heavily. But He continued for 28 days in the hospital! To survive with all this at the age of 85 itself is His Divinity.
It is His strong will that made Him continue. We should also understand that all these problems did not creep up suddenly. All parts can’t get damaged all of a sudden. Some doctors suspect that He must have been suffering since long and neglected His health; therefore it came to this situation.
Let’s keep that aside because I am not a doctor to speak in those terms; but as a devotee I can say this: He worked till the end. He never cared for His body or health. His only care and concern was the welfare of His devotees. In the process, He fell sick and neglected His health. Perhaps He wanted to withdraw. Probably He thought that His Divine agenda had come to an end, that it was time to leave. He decided when to come, and He decided when to leave. So be sure Hisadvent as well as eclipse were decided by Him.
SATHYA SAI BABA - ONLY SPIRITUAL MASTER BESTOWED STATE HONOURS
It is wonderful and unbelievable that on that day, 27th of April, it was a matter of celebration! Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, and the topmost leader of Congress Party, Madam Sonia Gandhi, Cabinet Ministers like Mrs. Ambika Sony, Governors like Shivaraj Patel and Narasimhan, Chief Ministers like Mr. Kumar Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, Yeddyurappa from the State of Karnataka, all were in attendance on the Samadhi day, when the body was laid to rest.
A special military band was called from Mysore. They stood in line and marched forward and placed the tri-coloured flag over the body. Wrapped in the flag, the body was taken to rest on the dais, the Samadhi place, which was decided by Swami long ago.
To my knowledge, only the most spiritual guru is given such an honor and no other government would give such respect and reverence to a spiritual guru. Sathya Sai Baba is the only spiritual Master who was given state honours.
I am reminded of the demise of top people in this country. I know the state honors accorded to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Ministers of India, when they died. Similar honours were given to Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
ONE MILLION PEOPLE HAD SWAMI’S LAST DARSHAN
The dais was beautifully decorated and representatives from different religions flew all the way from everywhere. The Imam of Delhi—the head priest of Islamic faith, the top man from Sikh religion, special Christian and Buddhist priests attended, and all offered prayers, reading out passages from their respected Holy scriptures in honour and adoration of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
For two days, His body was kept lying in state so that all could have His last darshan. He left His body on 24th of April at 7:40 AM. The body was brought to thisMandir around 12 o’clock and kept in Sai Kulwant Hall for public darshan at 8.00 PM. His body was kept in a casket for two days, 25th and 26th for all the devotees to have the last darshan.
Believe me, my friends, lakhs and lakhs of people lined up in queues, and marched towards the casket in perfect discipline and paid their respects. It is estimated at least 10 lakh (about one million) people must have had His last darshan.
How He has endeared Himself to all these people—villagers, farmers, daily casual labor, illiterate, very poor people, middle class people, rich people! How He could draw people of all cross sections, of all positions! They came like a tsunami! Puttaparthi was flooded with people!
IT WAS AN OUTPOURING OF LOVE AND DEVOTION
How about media? Members of regional, state, national, and international media, both press and television, were camped here in Prashanthi Nilayam for 20 days. All channels were waiting for the health bulletin on Bhagavan. The state and district administration evinced keen interest in releasing bulletins regularly because the public was anxious to know.
Those days were very tough, yet it was a reality. During the 28 days that Baba was hospitalised, there was no other thought, other than His health. In other words, our spiritual levels have gone up. In the local area, all shops and hotels were closed. All local people, right from the level of watchmen to the wealthiest people, cooked and distributed food freely to lakhs of devotees who came here to pay their last homage to Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. In some places expensive items like pulav, biriyani, fruits and ice cream were served. Nobody instructed them to do so. Water packets and bottles were distributed to everybody. Nobody told them to. This was unprecedented. It was an outpouring of love and devotion. Amazing!
I should also mention that right from 24th evening 6 o’clock, until His body was laid to rest, on 27th April at 9 AM we had Akhanda bhajans. We had men and women, boys and girls, singing bhajans throughout this period and the atmosphere was full of devotion, floral tributes and decorations. It is befitting because the advent of Avatar is a celebration and Avatar withdrawing from the body is a celebration too.
The whole humanity expressed its gratitude to the Avatar. It was a prayerful salutation to our Lord, an expression of respect, a token of love. The Trust held meetings repeatedly to make certain decisions, and also held some press conferences to answer the questions put to them.
DOUBTING THE TRUST MEMBERS IS DOUBTING BABA’S WISDOM
I would like to summarise what I know about the Trust. There have been many apprehensions and lot of vain gossip. Some papers published false allegations, attributing evil motives to Trust members. But as one who is associated with Sathya Sai movement for 40 years, living closely with Swami and the Trust members for the last 22 years, I can certainly give you some factual information about the Trust.
The facts: Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust is founded by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Himself and no other person. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is the founder and President of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. The members were nominated by Him. They were not elected. They are not chosen by the public. They were specially picked up by Bhagavan on the basis of their stature in society, their dedicated spirit to His mission and movement, and above all, their trust and devotion. Based on these criteria, Swami Himself selected the members of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. To question that or to doubt them is to doubt the wisdom of Baba, which is a sacrilege.
TRUST MEMBERS ARE REPUTED PERSONALITIES AND ARDENT DEVOTEES
I will make a mention of a couple of people, if not all. The first and foremost is the Secretary of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, Mr. N.C. Chakravarthi. Mr. Chakravarthi hales from the state of Tamil Nadu, and he is a civil servant. He was a highly ranked IAS Officer (Indian Administrative Service), serving as District Collector at Ananthapur. He had 20 years of service remaining when Swami wanted him to resign and come to Prashanthi Nilayam.
Can anyone match him in his devotion and sacrifice? None! Believe me or not, he has not come out of the four walls of Prashanthi Nilayam for 30 years. He stays here like a watchdog. He served as the Registrar of Sri Sathya Sai University for 13 long years. Later and to date, he has served as the Secretary of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. He is around 75 I think, and both his sons are settled abroad. He has nothing to gain, no need to earn. He doesn’t need anything. He never came for power because he was already a District Collector. He came here full of dedication and devotion. Can we doubt him?
The second man is Chief Justice of India, Justice P.N. Bhagwati who is known internationally. He was the Chairman of U.N. Human Rights commission. He has toured widely, is a great writer and is known for his unique judgments. A very popular man in the judicial circles, he is almost 90, and was picked by Baba as a Trust member. Do we doubt him now? What is it that he needs? He wanted an opportunity to serve Him, and therefore accepted Baba’s invitation to join the Trust.
Then we have Shri Indulal Shah from Bombay, who is above 90. He is a very popular figure, a disciplined man. With more than five decades of relentless service and dedication, and very high standards of devotion, he developed the Sri Sathya Sai Organisation to its present stature. The whole world respects him for his discipline and vision. What is it that he gets out of this membership? He came here to serve Swami, in response to His invitation to become a member of the Central Trust.
Therefore my friends, do not get carried away by anything that is said against the Trust members. They are very genuine, highly respected and reputed, popular figures. They are ardent devotees and hence Swami selected them as members of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust.
For your information, nobody receives cash directly. In Sri Sathya Sai Organisation, nobody is authorised to collect funds. You have to remit into the bank, collect the receipt, and everything is accounted for. All accounts are annually audited and the reports are sent to the central government. They are all responsible people.
Therefore, don’t be carried away by whatever is said against the Central Trust members. Don’t doubt them because the Central Trust was constituted at His will, and has been functioning successfully with all its accountability and credibility all these years.
TRUTH HAS NO FEAR
There are several channels covering the daily news. I thought it was time for me to come out and talk to them openly. I spoke to almost all media organisations, explaining the exact position and dispelling their doubts. I encouraged them to put as many questions as they could because truth has no fear. Truth does not entertain any doubts; it calls for frankness, fearlessness, openness.
Unsolicited, I did it as an act of service, as a token of love towards Bhagavan. I did it because I felt a call from within: “Come on, get out! Talk to everybody! Declare what you know! Don’t allow this character assassination to go on. Tell the truth to the world, whatever little you know.”
So in response to my conscience, I came out and spoke to everybody. I have great satisfaction today of having discharged this little bit of service, of obligation towards the organisation and Swami.
CELEBRATIONS IN PRASHANTHI NILAYAM FROM 4TH TO 6TH MAY
Then the administrators planned for meetings on 4th, 5th, and 6th of May. Fourth of May happens to be the 11th day of Samadhi and the 6th is the 13th day of Samadhi. The 6th of May happens also to be Easwaramma day also. So from 4th to 6th May, we had programs at Sai Kulwant Hall.
On the 4th, we had a meeting in Sai Kulwant Hall where a few elders shared their experiences with devotees. I was one of them. Besides me, we had Dr.Narendra Reddy, Vice Chairman of International Sathya Sai Organisation from Los Angeles, California USA. We also had another speaker, Sri Srinivansan, All India President Sri Sathya Sai Organisation, and finally, Mr. Sanjay Sahani, Principal of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Brindavan campus, Bangalore.
On 5th, the Trust members were talking to heads of different sections working in Prashanthi Nilayam. They were talking to students, consoling them and assuring their continued support to them. On 6th, Easwaramma day, about 20,000 poor people were fed in Sri Sathya Sai Hill View stadium. I understand that 12,000 women and 8,000 men attended that day. Everyone received food and clothes. Policeman helped maintain law and order. Sevadal and students of the university participated in the distribution.
Also on the 6th, at 10:30 in morning in South Indian canteen, all the devotees, visitors, and residents of Prashanthi Nilayam, were served lunch. So there was a big celebration in the morning. At 5 o’ clock in the evening, we had a meeting in which Dr. Venkataraman, the former Vice Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai University, addressed us. Also, Mr. V.S.R. Murthy from Hyderabad spoke in Telugu.
And finally, we had a music recital. The vocalists Malladi Brothers sang in praise of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. With that, the celebrations concluded.
ALL ACTIVITIES IN PRASHANTHI NILAYAM ARE PROCEEDING AS BEFORE
I will add another point: Prashanthi Nilayam today has slowly reconciled with and adjusted to the changed situation. People are attending bhajans as usual, work is going on as usual, and at the end of the bhajans, people line up. After arathi, they pay their respects to the Samadhi and silently return. A Divine chair is kept by the side of the Samadhi (the tomb) for people to have darshan. The spiritual program, Nagasankirtanam, Veda recitation, and bhajans, everything is proceeding as per schedule.
The All-India President Srinivasan and a member of the central Trust made it categorically clear that all activities will go on as usual. States will start visiting Prashanthi Nilayam as before. Different devotees from different nations will continue to visit Prashanthi Nilayam as before. Conferences, workshops—provincial, national, and international—will be held as before.
We also plan to have an International Orthopedic Conference and an International Workshop for Young Adults. On 17th and 18th May, we will celebrate Buddha Purnima in honour of Lord Buddha. About 800 people are going to attend from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, and Hong Kong.
DIVINE VIBRATIONS OF BABA ARE ALL AROUND
Divine vibrations and the undercurrent of Divinity are present. The smile of Baba is experienced; the physical Presence of Baba is felt by everyone as they go close to the Samadhi. He may not be in front of us in body and flesh, but we see Him there. We find Him answering our prayers. People are getting messages from the Samadhi. Some see Him sitting on the Divine chair, even though He is not here in flesh and blood.
My friends, I am more than sure that this place is going to be a Mecca, a Vatican, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Badari, Kashi, Tirupathi, Mathura, Shirdi, Gurudwara, a synagogue, a mosque, a church. This place will always attract people because the place has been developed by the Avatar Himself during His lifetime.
We hear of places that developed subsequent to the Avatar’s withdrawal, but this place has been developed inch-by-inch by Sri Sathya Sai Baba Himself. Every grain of it is His! The university, colleges, schools and hospitals are established—the only centre of support to poor and needy people for education and health care!
PRASHANTHI NILAYAM IS A SPIRITUAL GENERATOR
Therefore, there is no doubt at all that this Prashanthi Nilayam—a pilgrim centre, a centre of service and sadhana, a centre of fellowship of faiths, a centre that directs every spiritual seeker individually—will continue its glory, its splendour, its grandeur and tempo in the coming years because here there are the Divine vibrations of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba all around.
He will be watching. Just as a generator is a source of power, Prashanthi Nilayam is a spiritual generator. Out of this place, spiritual energy is drawn into different channels by different people, whomsoever it might be, from whichever region or country they belong to. Therefore, Prashanthi Nilayam will continue to confer bliss and peace on all devotees forever and ever more.
