En un bebé sin un defecto cardíaco congénito, el lado derecho del corazón bombea sangre pobre en oxígeno desde el corazón a los pulmones, y el lado izquierdo del corazón bombea sangre rica en oxígeno al resto del cuerpo En los bebés con un defecto del tabique ventricular, la sangre a menudo fluye desde el ventrículo izquierdo a través del defecto del tabique ventricular hacia el ventrículo derecho y hacia los pulmones. Esta sangre adicional que se bombea hacia los pulmones hace que el corazón y los pulmones trabajen más duro. Un paciente de Tetrología de Fallot, Ranjana fue diagnosticado a la edad de 14 años debido a los frecuentes episodios de dificultad para respirar y la incapacidad para realizar las actividades diarias.  La tetralogía de Fallot ocurre durante el crecimiento fetal, cuando el corazón del niño se está desarrollando. Si bien factores como la mala nutrición materna, la enfermedad viral o los trastornos genéticos pueden aumentar el riesgo de esta afección, en la mayoría de los casos se desconoce la causa de la TOF. Las cuatro anomalías que componen el TOF incluyen:  *Estenosis de la válvula pulmonar. La estenosis de la válvula pulmonar es un estrechamiento de la válvula pulmonar, la válvula que separa la cámara inferior derecha del corazón (ventrículo derecho) del vaso sanguíneo principal que conduce a los pulmones (arteria pulmonar).  El estrechamiento (constricción) de la válvula pulmonar reduce el flujo de sangre a los pulmones. El estrechamiento también puede afectar el músculo debajo de la válvula pulmonar. En algunos casos graves, la válvula pulmonar no se forma adecuadamente (atresia pulmonar) y causa un flujo sanguíneo reducido a los pulmones.  *Defecto septal ventricular. Un defecto del tabique ventricular es un orificio (defecto) en la pared (tabique) que separa las dos cámaras inferiores del corazón: los ventrículos izquierdo y derecho. El orificio permite que la sangre desoxigenada en el ventrículo derecho (la sangre que ha circulado por el cuerpo y que está regresando a los pulmones para reponer su suministro de oxígeno) fluya hacia el ventrículo izquierdo y se mezcle con la sangre oxigenada recién extraída de los pulmones.  La sangre del ventrículo izquierdo también fluye de regreso al ventrículo derecho de una manera ineficiente. Esta capacidad para que la sangre fluya a través del defecto del tabique ventricular reduce el suministro de sangre oxigenada al cuerpo y eventualmente puede debilitar el corazón.  *Aorta superior. Normalmente, la aorta, la arteria principal que conduce al cuerpo, se ramifica del ventrículo izquierdo. En la TOF, la aorta se desplaza ligeramente hacia la derecha y se encuentra directamente sobre el defecto del tabique ventricular.  *En esta posición, la aorta recibe sangre de los ventrículos derecho e izquierdo, mezclando la sangre pobre en oxígeno del ventrículo derecho con la sangre rica en oxígeno del ventrículo izquierdo.  Hipertrofia ventricular derecha. Cuando la acción de bombeo del corazón está sobrecargada de trabajo, hace que la pared muscular del ventrículo derecho se espese. Con el tiempo, esto podría hacer que el corazón se ponga rígido, se debilite y eventualmente falle.  Algunos niños o adultos que tienen TOF pueden tener otros defectos cardíacos, como un orificio entre las cámaras superiores del corazón (defecto del tabique auricular), un arco aórtico derecho o anomalías de las arterias coronarias. A Muslim boy donates blood, a Christian woman processes the blood, a Hindu man drives miles to collect it, to save an infant girl with a hole in her heart, while her single teenage parent, Prays to an Empty Chair. Faith, like Blood, understands no religion or socio-economic denomination. Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, begins yet another year, steadfast, on a Promise of alleviating the burden of Congenital Heart Disease, in the process transform little creatures with unhealthy hearts into children of immortality. The month of January 2019 saw roles being assigned, new ventures being signed and an d a growing Sanjeevani family become a microcosm of ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbhakam’. The Divine Mother & Child Health Program has firmly established its presence in Four New states of India and ventured into specialized Antenatal Screening. The program has grown to attract several medical volunteers who worked tirelessly over the last 12 months in various capacities. Dr. Sachin Talvar, Professor, Dept. of CVTS AIIMS New Delhi & Dr. B.K Thelma, Prof. Dept. of Genetics, Delhi University were guest speakers at Palwal, Haryana. Makar Sankaranti and Republic Day were celebrated in full zest. From the Heart  Why Free? A Question is often asked. Why is Healthcare, Totally Free in Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani ? To see every being as one’s very own, brings a beautiful view of the world. A world where there are no walls of your and mine in between, but just we and ours. How does a father charge a fee to his own child. Or can he ? Especially when the child is dying in its own mother’s arms.  The Universe chooses to breathe Life into the child and so - perpetuates itself. The Child lives, and Life goes on.  Life in the World is sustained by the ‘Currency Of Love’. Sathya Sai Sanjeevani uses it and makes Fee,  Free. C. Sreenivas Chairman Sanjeevani Beyond Borders Khalid Kakkar Hailing from Afghanistan, was all of 25 days when he was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Defect - Ventricular Septal Defect. VSD is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This wall also is called the ventricular septum.. A ventricular septal defect happens during pregnancy if the wall that forms between the two ventricles does not fully develop, leaving a hole. A ventricular septal defect is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth. In a baby without a congenital heart defect, the right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs, and the left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. In babies with a ventricular septal defect, blood often flows from the left ventricle through the ventricular septal defect to the right ventricle and into the lungs. This extra blood being pumped into the lungs forces the heart and lungs to work harder. Over time, if not repaired, this defect can increase the risk for other complications, including heart failure, high blood pressure in the lungs (called pulmonary hypertension), irregular heart rhythms (called arrhythmia), or stroke.         Khalid's father was a daily wage laborer whose financial condition could not afford the treatment. The lack of medical facilities to treat and manage this condition in Afghanistan further added to the burden of the family. 3 years later, Khalid's father heard of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals from a friend of his. The family took a loan and flew to India for the treatment. Sai Sanjeevani has given this child a Gift of Life and today Khalid smiles bright after his successful surgery.       Khalid's father speaks with love and respect towards India. He aims to educate Khalid well. He wants Khalid to be a doctor to help sort the issues in his home country.  Giving Hope Ranjana Chauhan, a 19 year old graduate student was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease at the Metro Hospital in Delhi and was referred to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Palwal Centre. A Tetrology of Fallot patient, Ranjana was diagnosed at the age of 14 because of frequent spells of difficulty in breathing and inability to perform daily activities.  Tetralogy of Fallot occurs during fetal growth, when the child's heart is developing. While factors such as poor maternal nutrition, viral illness or genetic disorders might increase the risk of this condition, in most cases the cause of TOF is unknown. The four abnormalities that make up the TOF include: Pulmonary valve stenosis. Pulmonary valve stenosis is a narrowing of the pulmonary valve — the valve that separates the lower right chamber of the heart (right ventricle) from the main blood vessel leading to the lungs (pulmonary artery). Narrowing (constriction) of the pulmonary valve reduces blood flow to the lungs. The narrowing might also affect the muscle beneath the pulmonary valve. In some severe cases, the pulmonary valve doesn't form properly (pulmonary atresia) and causes reduced blood flow to the lungs. Ventricular septal defect. A ventricular septal defect is a hole (defect) in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers of the heart — the left and right ventricles. The hole allows de-oxygenated blood in the right ventricle — blood that has circulated through the body and is returning to the lungs to replenish its oxygen supply — to flow into the left ventricle and mix with oxygenated blood fresh from the lungs. Blood from the left ventricle also flows back to the right ventricle in an inefficient manner. This ability for blood to flow through the ventricular septal defect reduces the supply of oxygenated blood to the body and eventually can weaken the heart. Overriding aorta. Normally the aorta — the main artery leading out to the body — branches off the left ventricle. In TOF, the aorta is shifted slightly to the right and lies directly above the ventricular septal defect. In this position the aorta receives blood from both the right and left ventricles, mixing the oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle with the oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle. Right ventricular hypertrophy. When the heart's pumping action is overworked, it causes the muscular wall of the right ventricle to thicken. Over time this might cause the heart to stiffen, become weak and eventually fail. Some children or adults who have TOF may have other heart defects, such as a hole between the heart's upper chambers (atrial septal defect), a right aortic arch or abnormalities of the coronary arteries. She was successfully operated upon and discharged. She has recovered and is now attending college. Ranjana is an IAS aspirant and is preparing for her Civil Services Examinations.  A daughter of a farmer, Ranjana receives a scholarship of 60000 INR per annum from the Government of Uttar Pradesh to support her education. What we admire most is her fervour to continue on her journey towards excellence and her Spirit to give back. She has pledged to Serve anyway she can upon achieving her degree, because she believes, "if it were not this second lease to life, I would not see my 21st birthday"  "The child is the future and wealth of the nation." Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani is on a relentless mission to ensure the future of thousands of such children is kept safe, close to HEART.  As we wish Ranjana all the best, we move ahead in the vision of Healing Little Hearts! Impact of Sanjeevani Sahil Quereshi was 4 years old when his parents got to know that he suffers from a Congenital Heart Disease - Severe Valvular PS with intact paradoxical IVS. After the necessary tests, the doctors informed his family that his treatment would cost 150,000 INR. The father, a petty shop owner, was the only earning member of the family of 4, living on a humble income of 100,000 INR/year constituting to the 'Lower Middle Class' Social strata. This income supported the 4 members of the family including putting 2 children through schooling. The family did not qualify for any health or property loans from banks either. Added to this situation, the father suffered a cardiovascular event leading to him being paralyzed and bed ridden. So it fell upon the two very young children to support the family at the time. By the aid of an existing government scheme, Sahil was operated in 2008 in Hyderabad but his condition did not improve. The family had already spent 200,000 INR on his treatment, it was the last of their savings. This meant, no emergency funds for any pressing reason was available for any member of the family. Any new expenditure was sure to plummet the family into poverty certifying them as a family 'Below the Poverty Line'. They were headed towards complete bankruptcy and inability to maintain their single source of income - the petty shop. The gravity of the situation became more eminent when it was ascertained that the only possible earning member of the family (the patient) would not survive his next birthday. It was then that the family heard about Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani in the news. What the family very clearly recollects is, their only worry suddenly became that of survival. So began their Sanjeevani Journey. The patient was operated on and had a full recovery in a mere 7 days. Sahil is now a healthy, school going young man of Class 12 and is able to perform all the regular activities appropriate for his age. Additionally, he is working in a private office in the accounts department, part-time to support his family. Sahil has taken the financial responsibilities of his family. This is one of many who've been on the brink of utter, oppressive, unavoidable debt and Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani has had the privilege of changing the course of an entire family with the Gift of Life. An accomplished Paediatric Cardiac Team from Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, India, in partnership with The “Gift of Life” a non profit by the Spiritan Self Awareness Initiative Nigeria, from the 5th - 15th of January 2019 performed 23 Paediatric Cardiac Surgeries and diagnosed operability of 80 other children at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. What is special about Nigeria? I think,  her People! Africa was the first home for mankind and  humanity spread all over the planet from here. Nigerians have preserved  primordial values of love, gratitude and kindness and the rest of the world has much to learn from them. There are no pretensions and one can experience raw emotions among her people. I will remain eternally grateful for this experience. I shall cherish the fortnight I spent on UNTH campus. There are many memories, but a following few will remain etched in my consciousness. “This team has come, only to save my child, the other kids are incidental!”. This was what Godswill’s mother had to say. Godswill was a very sick child and his only hope of survival was a very high risk surgery. The decision to operate Godswill was not an easy one. There were significant challenges, but a mother’s faith and convection made it possible in the end. “Is my child alive?”. I have performed more than 5000 surgeries and have spoken to numerous parents, but I have never been asked this question. I was taken aback by the question, only to realize that how little she expected. “I will not pray for any other child’s surgery to be cancelled”. This is what Chidiuto’s mother told my friend Ricky when she was informed that her daughter is on the standby list and she can be operated only if any child on the operating list is cancelled. She was desperate and knew that her daughter will not live without surgery. Despite this, she did not loose her distinction of right from wrong. “I will sing and dance for you!” Her child has been just shifted to the intensive care unit after a complicated surgery lasting more than six hours and she wants to sing and dance for the team. This expression of gratitude made me very emotional. Everyone talks about the “Gift of Life“ we have given to these children and their families. But this is only partly true. The children and their families  have given us a bigger gift: “an opportunity to love and serve”. Not many of us are given this opportunity. As Gandhiji said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose oneself in the service of others”,  and I am only beginning to find myself. Thank You! Dr. Ashish Katewa Divine Mother & Child Health Program The Divine Mother and Child Health Program is a unique Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani initiative providing Tertiary to Primary Healthcare at the source. The work tirelessly continues as momentum is gained in the form of an increase in the workforce of volunteering young doctors from various parts of the world, obstetricians and gynaecologists, over-seas subject experts and Our own vivacious Departmental Heads. The presence of a Tertiary care Centre in a Primary Healthcare Cohort is an unusual and tremendous value addition to the current scenario. The Antenatal Screening program took wind under this aegis and several pregnant mothers have enrolled in our program for monthly monitoring and assessment.  Principal of Khalsa School, Raipur pens a touching letter to the DMCHP team.  "Under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram(RBSK), "Chirayu", the team from Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital visited Khalsa Higher Secondary School, Raipur from October 19, 2018 to 29 October 2018 to conduct school health screening. There were around 560 children screened from 1-12 classes with a great deal of enthusiasm and dedication. The team was very interactive during the general examination of the child, which maker the students confide in the team, leading to sharing of problems and difficulties faced without any hesitation. The doctors did a commendable job.  A student of class 2, named Master Aman Banjare was detected with Congenital Heart Disease during the screening. For further confirmation of the diagnosis, the child was referred to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital where the echocardiography was performed and the final diagnosis was made leading to a successful Cath-intervention. The child has now recovered and is leading a healthy life and attending school regularly.  On behalf of the entire school students, staff members and the family members of Aman Banjare, I am really very thankful and grateful to the team for conducting the screening which has led to saving an innocent life and giving him the gift of New Life.  I pray that may God give you strength to help and serve such children who otherwise have no access to such facilities. The screening through HD Stethoscope was also conducted at the Anganwadi Centres. A total of 761 children have been screened in the month of January by Dr. Rishikesh and his team of which 51 operable cases have been diagnosed so far. 2 of the 51 have been directed to our Atal Nagar Center due to the emergent need for surgery. Blood Donation Camp - The Oberoi, Gurugram Human blood is a non substitutable component of human existence. In many medical procedures and injury crises, the utilization of entire blood is very much essential. However the need for access to transfusion blood in surgeries is particularly high in developing countries like ours. On 7 January 2019 Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, Palwal, Haryana, in collaboration with Rotary Club Faridabad and Rotary Blood Bank, Faridabad, drove a blood donation camp at The Oberoi Gurgaon. The staff of the hotel and Rotarians came together vivaciously to help the cause. Art for Heart An Initiative Started by the Sai Sanjeevani team, to collect paintings, drawings, or sketches, old or new to adorn the walls of the hospitals, not just to add colour but as a sacrosanct therapy of the soul.
