2018

Anshika Upadhyay, 1.2 yrs

1.2 yr old child, 6.8 kgs child underwent device closure of PDA on 4.12.17. On followup visit, a month later, her lower limb pulses were feeble and ECHO revealed migration of device leading to coarctation (narrowing) of aorta. The child was readmitted for device retreival and surgical ligation of PDA on beating heart, which was done successfully on 19.01.2018.
Technological advances have made non surgical closure of PDA possible. However, complications such as hemolysis, left pulmonary artery stenosis, coarctation of aorta are estimated between 5-10%. Most of the complications present immediatly or early after intervention. In our case, it was challenging to address the complication after 5 weeks.
Gagan Prajapati, 8.5 yrs

Gagan Prajapathi , male child, aged 8.5 years was diagnosed with congenital heart disease in infancy. He was visually impaired with history of convulsions and loss of consciousness. He was evaluated by a neurologist and  an MRI scan of brain revealed colpocephaly with left sided porencephaly  with Mass effect / compression of left thalamus .

Colpocephaly is commonly encountered associated with congenital insults, including hypoxia or infection, premature low-birth–weight deliveries, and chromosomal abnormalities. Neurologically, children with colpocephaly may have developmental delay or cognitive impairment, visual or sensorimotor deficits, spasticity and seizures.

Porencephaly is a term used to describe any fluid-filled cavity in the fetal or neonatal brain. The pathology has its origin in fetal life. Most cases begin as ischemic infarcts that subsequently cavitate,.Similar lesions may result from brain necrosis occurring in prenatal infections.

This child was operated on 18/01/2018 for Ventricular Septal  Defect  Closure , SAM excision and PDA ligation . Surgery was uneventful and  patient got extubated the  same day and shifted out of ICU on the second postoperative day. The challenging aspects of anesthetising   patients with these conditions are managing young age patients, the reduced ability of patients to cooperate or communicate especially  when visually impaired and the possibility of seizures. The anticonvulsant medication should be maintained according to the normal medication regimen until the time of surgery and administration should be resumed as soon as possible to prevent perioperative seizure.  As our patient was not on any medication, anticonvulsant  levetiracetam  was started a day before surgery and continued in the intra and post operative period  A pain free recovery should be planned to reduce cerebral excitation on emergence from anesthesia.  Our patient is discharged and awaiting arrangements being done by our organization for his  studies in Braille and a better future ahead.
27 year old, Ganesh Burman, son of a Fisherman from the  sacred land of Nawadwip, a distant remote village of the Nadia District of WestBengal get healed at Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES

First aid and Basic life support training

A unique initiative was launched in the new year by Department of Public Health & Research, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur providing training on First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR), nutrition, hygiene, tobacco & alcohol cessation to students of higher secondary schools.

Apart from treatment services for CHD, the hospital conducts various community outreach activities through the Department of Public Health & Research for promoting health of the local community. A key initiative is health screening of rural children in Schools & anganbadis for early detection & treatment of childhood diseases followed by Health Education sessions for students and teachers on nutrition, personal hygiene, oral health and tobacco cessation.

An innovative concept was launched in January 2018, training students of higher secondary schools -  grade 9th to 12th - on first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) . In January 2018, the team conducted 20 training sessions across 8 Higher secondary schools including Parsada, Rakhi, Lakhauli, Upparwara, Mandir Hasaud girls & boys Schools. A total of 1850 students of std 9th to 12th were trained . Training was imparted using innovative videos , PowerPoint presentation & models. Students were very enthusiastic to practice CPR on life like models & understood the importance of knowing basic first aid & CPR  which would help them save their lives or others in the event of an emergency.

" I had the privilege of spending the second week of January at the Satya Sai Sanjeevani Children's Cardiac Centre in Raipur. From the moment I stepped out to Raipur airport to the day I (sadly) left,  it has been an experience of feeling belonged, loved, very well looked after and above all the pleasure of working with a lot of deeply committed professionals. Not only was I well recieved with what I could contribute as an intensive care specialist, I felt I was left with much more than I gave- a fantastic exposure to a variety of cases and experiencing how a relatively resource poor setting is doing so well. It is difficult to capture every single moment in words, from the welcoming smart admin people who could type echo reports faster than I understood to the awesome work being led by my esteemed colleagues in Drs. Ashish and Atul and their teams.

A week truly felt like an era, I left rejuvenated and with a strong hope and confidence of the SSSH truly being capable of becoming a world renowned place in years to come. Of course, a lot of progress remains to be made. I know that you have the right ingredients and the commitment towards serving the countless families-  the almighty will surely give His Blessings.

I hope the institute will continue to keep the doors open to professionals like me to foster learning, collaboration and above all an opportunity to give back at least something to the soil we came from.
